View Full Version : Hood Pins

As a general rule I hate hood pins. Even my 150MPH street / drag car does not even have hood pins. HOWEVER, it looks like I will be forced to use hood pins, or reverse the hood because the hood latch will be in the way of the intercooler we have to run. Since I ignore hood pins at all cost, I wonder if anyone has seen anything other then the traditional pin and clevis, or the old twist locks that use a safe key. Either of those are not an option, I would rather not have a hood.

I know you guys surf a lot, wonder what you may have seen?

Thanks

Trip to the junkyard to look for a low profile one? Toyota seems to have pretty compact latches.

Oh god no. Do what Charlie did with the MULE and run a latch at each corner. I think they were BMW or Audi pieces. There is some pics on Lat-g somewhere. They were done when they put the new hood on.

I've never seen them installed, but if it's done right it should look pretty slick.

What about something like these. Couple of guys in town have them on thier cars, dont look too bad. All you see is a little bit of the pin and the little latch taht slides around it.

why not do some really trick reverse hood pins? have the pin bolted to the hood and pin them through the core support or whatever you have solid?

I've seen a few car's (not first gen Camaros), that were retrofitted with the Corvette hood hinges from a 68-82. Its a reverse style latch thats pretty cool, but the problems can cause alot of trouble.

Over at Classic Trucks website, they have an install on an Early F100. The Link is here:
http://www.classictrucksweb.com/tech/0407cl_cpp

It can be a bit of trouble, especially considering the structure of your hood, the people who do it to the older trucks have alot of room to work with under the hood. If you want it to withstand alot of speed and air/wind movement ive never heard of that before.

I guess you could have the pins Lesrace82 posted, powdercoated to body color so they wont show up at all unless someone is really looking...

I guess it all depends on how much you want to avoid hood pins.

Frank,

Have you seen the car that roger berman built two years ago! The orange and black 55 conv.! He had a solenoid hooked up in each fender and had a button in the car he hit that button and little pins shot out on each side through little holes in the hood! Pretty trick I would think they could be used as a secondary latches! :dunno:

Also I don't know when you saw the chicayne last but troy actually countersunk 12 point bolts in the hood of it and tightens them down after the hood is latched! :dunno:

How about making the hood open reverse direction with hydrolic mechanisms. Push a button and it opens automatically then closes automatically. An example would be Steve Sandlin's Inciner8tor. There are pics and videos on lateral-G http://www.lateral-g.org/sandlin/ I saw a 55 with a reverse opening hood about 2 weeks ago. Very very nice set up. No visible locking mechanisms or anything ugly at all. Very trick too.

Why not put a pair of dzus fastners on each corner. Totally flush, you can powdercoat the heads black. Bam, done.

How about the OEM style like Oldsmobile used? They are made to sit down in a recess in the hood, so you would have to modify the hood. I once used a set on a fiberglass hood for an '85 Monte Carlo, and made the recesses with a set of motorcycle horns, looked very trick. You could powder coat them black. Just a thought.
