I am not sure if this is the type of car normally posted here but one of your members suggested I post it up. I have built a bunch of other similar cars but this one is even more exciting.... Hard to see any car guy not liking a V10 in a small car...
This swap is just getting underway and will be a little slow going as I am working on other swaps as well right now. The car showed up yesterday so I felt I should get the threads going. This car is being built for Steve for at Blunttech.com. He sells OEM and aftermarket parts...lots of BMW and VW. As well as many brands of performance parts.
As I build this car updates will come in this thread but they will come slightly earlier at the following URLS:
http://bmw.blunttech.com/ and on my site http://www.classicdaily.net
You can also follow updates as they happen on instagram @classicdaily
A quick overview of the build
88 E30 M3, DS on black
V10 S85 with 6 speed from a 2010 M5
Fortune Auto Coilovers
Completely rebuilt suspension
Big brakes (either will be Porsche 996 or brakes from a 135...hoping to go with 135 brakes but we will see what fits the best)
Engine will be run complete standalone with Megasquirt 3 Pro from DIY Autotune (launch control, etc etc)
A few pictures of what is going on so far....
Here is what it is going into.... this is it coming off the trailer last night and going into storage for a bit

Big updates won't come for at least a month. I am finishing up an S52 E21 and a LS1 E28. The S52 build is on my site, www.classicdaily.net . And my LS1 e28 is on the site along with an LS3 E36 I built for a customer.
Once the e21 and e28 are done then blunts car will get underway.

Fortune Auto Coilovers are here.

The goal for this car is to have a fairly quiet exhaust system. So we are looking to the OEM world. This is a take off exhaust from a Dodge Viper. Before the resonators there will be a cross over pipe....oh yeah and electric cutouts.

The engine is sitting on a pallet on wheels. So we tried rolling it in. Will need to lift it in with an engine puller but we wanted to try anyway.

As far as we can get it for now without pulling it off the pallet.

We have been doing lots of research looking for off the shelf rotors that will work with the 135 6 piston calipers on the E30 M3. The biggest issue with the M3 is there is VERY little clearance between the rotor and the tie rod. When you go with a really big rotor. The stock M3 rotor is very shallow, right around 40mm.
So after digging through lots and lots of different rotor specs for all different cars we think we have found something that will work. This rotor is 330mm by 28mm and NOT off a BMW. Once we know everything will work we will say what it is off of. We don't want misinformation out there. It is only 39mm deep so there is around 7mm of clearance at the tie rod.
Now this rotor will need some machining but it is close. The center bore will have to be opened up a little bit and the wheel studs will need to be ob-longed inward.
Ultra flat rotor.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/IMAGE_1359-1.jpeg
Bolt holes are close...
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/IMAGE_1361-1.jpeg
Ground down the rub of the m3 bearing (will be replaced anyway) to be able to set the rotor flat against the hub.
Tie rod clearance

Mocking up in a 17" wheel
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/IMAGE_1371-1.jpeg
Now this wheel will not clear the caliper. If you look there is some wood stacked to get it to clear. So we will need a different wheel setup. There is around 22mm of "spacer" right now.

I know approximately zero about BMW engine control.
What is the plan for integrating the new engine with the old chassis, etc…I imagine you don't call BMW Performance and order up a stand alone harness like you can for an number of LSx engine.

As of now we will be using Megasquirt3...but we are looking at other options to crack the stock computer. It's much more complicated than the LSx stuff.

Can't the stock ECU and any other electronics be swapped into the older car? Essentially making the ECU think it is in the new car?

Looks like we will be able to keep AC. This is a street car afterall and will be driven.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/IMAGE_1393-1.jpeg
The trans is tight in the tunnel but it fits so far without any adjustments. It might need a little opening up in a couple spots just to give good clearance but so far so good.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/IMAGE_1400-1.jpeg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/IMAGE_1401-1.jpeg
Might do something different with the heater hose connection to be able to push it back a little further and give a little more room here.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/IMAGE_1417-1.jpeg
But it is pretty close to the firewall already.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/IMAGE_1418-1.jpeg
The cat is built into the header and was hitting the bottom of the car. The plan was to cut them off anyway so off they go now.
These headers are equal length.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/IMAGE_1427-1.jpeg
Inside the collector.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/IMAGE_1388-1.jpeg
They dump in a nice location.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/IMAGE_1404-1.jpeg
The main issue now is building a new subframe and/or modifing the oil pan to get everything to work.
You can also see the catless header here.

So the subframe and oil pan want to live in the same spot. So what do we do....cut the oil pan? Move the subframe? Or a little of both? The plan is to go with modified subframe and cut oil pan.
First step is to build a jig to hold the subframe so once it's cut up it will still be in the same spot.
Made with 2.5" angle (might be a little over kill but I don't want anything to move)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/02/IMAGE_1437-1.jpeg
Locating the steering rack. The rack MIGHT get moved forward slightly to allow for less cutting of the oil pan. That is why there are two locations. One about 3/4" forward.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/02/IMAGE_1438-1.jpeg
Just random jig pics
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/02/IMAGE_1439-1.jpeg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/02/IMAGE_1440-1.jpeg
Time to cut the subframe apart.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/02/IMAGE_1444-1.jpeg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/02/IMAGE_1441-1.jpeg
Back in the jig...
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/02/IMAGE_1442-1.jpeg
Next step is to bolt the subframe to the car and see where things start lining up. Also need to find some fittings for the steering rack as I want to move some of the lines to the front to give more room.
classicdaily
02-14-2014, 03:33 AM
So to limit the amount of oil pan that has to be cut we are going to mount the steering rack as tight as possible. We are using a 2.7 turn Z3 rack and moved the lines to the top/front of the rack rather than the front. As seen here.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/02/IMAGE_1445-1.jpeg
To mount the rack tight as possible the subframe is also the mounting spot. This started as 2" - 0.25 wall box and was cut down into a C. A few spots had to be notched out to make it all fit around the rack. This was cut witha plasma and still needs to be cleaned up a little.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/02/IMAGE_1446-1.jpeg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/02/IMAGE_1447-1.jpeg

In the car
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/02/IMAGE_1479-1.jpeg
About how much will need to be trimmed from the pan.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/02/IMAGE_1480-1.jpeg
Now this subframe is FAR from done. It will get a lot more reinforcements but we are still at the, "lets make it all fit" stage.

Very cool project. Piper Motorsport built a very similar car a while back, here's a link to their site, it might have some useful info for you: http://www.pipermotorsport.com/blogs/news/4993032-project-franken-m3 In talking with one of the guys about their build, they learned the hard way that one of the cylinder banks is advanced 30 degrees of the other or something odd like that, a very unusual configuration with that BMW V10.

You can see a piece of bent plate going under the pan here. This piece was fun to make.

I really like how this part came out. Some little open holes still.

Also if you are going to vintage in NC this coming weekend this car will be there. Not done but it will be there to check out.

This update is from a few weeks ago but just finally getting around to uploading all the pics and posting.
Welding the new subframe up.

Starting on mounts
drivers side
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/06/IMAGE_1718-1.jpeg
These will be fully boxed and also a new set of plates will be drawn and then water jetted. These are the mock ups.

Subframe with mounts welded on

And with both mounts connected. All this will be powder coated

Steering clearance

Adding another joint
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/06/IMAGE_1749-1.jpeg
And a locator
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/06/IMAGE_1753-1.jpeg
This is JUST a MOCK up. We needed to have the car movable to take to a show so this locator mount was just tacked on so the car can steer. There will be a stronger more elegant solution once the engine comes back out.

Rebuilt rear axles

The coilovers are turned all the way down here and there is about 3-3.5" here. Yes it is close but the air boxes are about a 1/4" from the hood.

Here it is at the vintage in NC a couple weeks ago.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/06/IMAGE_1763-1.jpeg
Also it is looking VERY good that we will be using the stock DME. nando has been working on cracking it and it's looking like it's gonna happen.

Not a huge update but something none the less.
We had found some rotors that were going to work for the brake setup but they were not ideal. So we got some hats from Ireland and then had some rotors made custom from coleman eng.
Here are the rotors when they showed up.

These are just sorta stuck in there...if you look to the left of the caliper it looks like they are hitting the wheel. The caliper is nut but there is a washer in there to keep the caliper clamped to the rotor. There is room all around.

rear rotor....nothing that exciting here.
