a buddy of mine has a 700r4 in his 71 cutlass with a 455 and 3.73 gear, but hes running 275 60 15 tires and his rpm is really low, i can't remember the exact number since its been a while since we've talked but he has about 450-500 HP in that setup and it runs reliably.

My choice would be the th200-r4, since the gearing is better. Having a 4l60e I do not care for the first gear to 2nd drop.

200r4 cost double to build than the 700r

You'll like it. I have one in my car. Don't worry about the cam lift. You take care of that with the Torque Converter. Choose one in the low to mid 2000 rpm range. But of course talk to the torque converter specialists. (it's the duration and lobe separation that usually cause fits with street-ability).

You can tune the 1-2 shift so that it happens at a lower rpm.

200-4R are expensive because usable cores are rare as hens teeth. It has a great performance reputation after decades of development, but as a platform, it's still a dinosaur. Like a SONY Walkman. ..And if good cores are hard to find, how can you be sure you are getting a good core? ..Or that if your good 2004R blows up, that you'll be able to find another. I still like the transmission from a functionality standpoint. Just be sure to factor in the realities of availability. You're investing in something that was designed in the 70's (introduced in 1980) and hasn't bee produced in almost a quarter century.

Love my 700r4 the recent refresh rebuild is almost done on it judt have to save my pennies for the torque converter. Great on the highway and first is a screamer. Suggest if go that route buy reputable the first time or build your own.

So who builds a good 200r4 are the 700r and what good size torq to go with ?

Well the 200r4 as a multi-bell so it will bolt to your bpo. And it is the same length as your 350. The 200 has a 2.74 first, the 700 has a 3.07 first. The rpm drop at 3-4 shift is 650-700, add the lock-up 200-250rpm more drop. hope this helps Tobby

200r4 Stage 2 with a 23-2500 convertor, and the one wire lock-up. Tobby

It's 1-2 shift is pretty low. I meant like when going wot. My car is back to having a stock converter, so it's a little more noticeable. The 1-2 shift isn't really a big deal just for when racing and those rpms drop.
Cutlassmann I think tobby meant going with one of his transmissions

Not necessarily my trans, there's company's out there that offer good products. Do your research and talk to them, then decide. Not trying to push something on you, just giving some info. thanks Tobby

Is Bowler Performance Transmissions better than Extreme Automatics and why?

I would swap over to the 700r4, that overdrive is nice and it allows you to have a decent gear to still get up and go.
