I have a stock driveshaft that I was going to have sent out to be shortened at a local driveline shop. I will be running 4:10/12 bolt, T56, and a 350HP LS1. Should I upgrade the driveshaft or is the stock steel one ok? What things should I consider?

Thanks!

Andrew

I just had a new one made... it was less than $300, including the slip yoke. If I can find the picture of my tunnel mod, I'll post it here.

I had my stock shaft shortened. The shop that did it only suggested that I not use it with slicks...said otherwise it should be fine as long as I'm not running really high horsepower. Your car and mine are nearly identically configured - LS1 T56 4.11 12 bolt...no worries!

I had my driveshaft shortened by something like 1 3/4". It was a fairly new aluminum driveshaft, so I wanted to be able to re-use it.

The splines on the old Saginaw's and Muncie's are the same as on the T56, so your old slip yoke will fit the T56, it's just a matter of whether you want to have the driveshaft shortened and rebalanced, or get a new one.

I ordered my driveshaft from Summit but it was built by Strange and as I recall it was about $350 with 1350 series U-joints and T56 slip yoke. You call Summit and they point you to a build sheet that you have to download and fill out then fax it back to them. They then send the build sheet to Strange where they review and accept it. The whole process takes about a week and it comes to your door.

I had it made at Dayton Clutch and Joint, in Dayton, OH. They are only like 30 miles away... so it seemed like a no brainer for me.
I didn't go with aluminum, and I got the 1310 U joints. (Solid) I have no plans of running slicks on this and I'm pretty easy on take offs.(ie. I don't dump the clutch @ high RPM's) SO, use your own judgement on how heavy duty you need to go.
