What Cam would be a good choice for a stock 2004 GTO LS1 going into a 1968 Camaro? Not looking to update the heads at this time but would like to increase HP at RW. What should I expect from this motor, 400hp at the crank with a Cam swap?
Thanks ahead of time.

You should check out Ls1Tech.com. They have a lot of combos with dynos to see what a can swap will provide along with any drivability issues.
Only you know how much you'll sacrifice for a given power goal. I'd suggest something around a 228R or a EPS 226/230 at the biggest.

Give Brian at BrianTooleyRacing a call, he will get you setup. Very affordable spring kits, pushrods, cam, etc.

Are there any physical size difference with the 2004 gto lS1 block vs the older LS1 block that would limit my cam choices or all all LS1 blocks the same where cams are concerned.
Thanks for the recommend, I will be giving Brian a call to see what he has to offer.

There is no difference. However...The later LS1s shared the same block as the LS6. Same internals.
I have a 228R cam in my LS1.

You should also contact Martin from Tick Performance (http://www.tickperformance.com/). He's a good guy and knows his cams. He can spec one for you if you want something custom. Let him know what your goals are and he'll pick the right cam.

If you have an auto trans w/stock converter, I'd lean toward 224/224 581/581 area. Anything in that range or slightly smaller will perform well & should put you approx 400 at crank w/ good tune. If manual trans you can go slightly bigger. More than 228 and heads start to limit power potential. Keep gear ratio in mind as well. Bigger the cam, the more gear you'll want to run to keep the motor in the powerband. If you have highway gears & dont plan on changing them, id keep the cam on the smaller side. Scott

Cams are much debated on them depends what you want really. What your goals are what speeds the engine will be in if your planning on running power adders. I have several grinds for them mild to wild.

Don't be afraid of the larger ones either I have some in the 233/238 range that have excellent street manners and power band still comes in early at around 2500 so 3000 stalls and lock up converters are still fun and cruise nice on the highway and don't buck and surge when in lock up head porting is a good investment. 5.3l heads on 5.7l will get compression ratio up to almost 11:1 static as well. The GTO probly came with 243 casting and is sought after for performance also have lots of material for porting I can have ported as well.
