View Full Version : Opinions on Proforged front steering components 1966 Chevelle. 13/16 vs 7/8

Was under her today and noted that my right side toe adjuster just spun freely and no matter the amount of tightening is going to make it stay. Also the ball joints at both ends are pretty shot, lots of flipity flop.
So This appears to be a clean and fairly painless upgrade, I'm just not sure on the whole 7/8 vs 13/16's. I know I had to buy a new pitman arm when I did the Grand Cherokee box mod (my pitman arm appeared to have been a smaller standard " (guess some 66's came with a 13/16 hole vs the 1 1/18 that is standard, it was also a 28 tooth/key vs the standard 32), so I ordered the new pitman arm and that's installed and the new steering is working (minus a continually changing alignment).
So because the stock system ball joints are all pretty shot and they are dirty (hehe), I thought about replacing it. What i've read is that ProForged actually sells some stuff to Hotchkis (I have Hotchkis front hallow sway bar). And I already have tubular A-Arms , adjustable suspension etc. So really it's the last few bits of steering that I need to swap out.
If I go by cost, appears Summit at $355 shipped or so, but really not sure on the 13/16 vs 7/8. Do I just need to measure or is there a model year/trim cutoff?
Or heck is there a better option, read not costing more, unless it's really good!
Thanks
Tory

Tory,
Sounds like a cool project!
All '66 Chevelles used the 7/8" center link (which would be our steering kit #116-10009). That said, you mentioned that you bought a new pitman arm - it is possible that you bought the pitman arm designed for the 13/16" center link, in which case you'd need our kit #116-10008.
Can you let us know the pitman arm part #?
FYI, here is a picture of the kit - it is all e-coated black (virtually rustproof) and has billet aluminum adjusting sleeves.

Here's a link to the kit on Summit:

I would also recommend our Tall Upper and Lower Ball Joints:

Here's a link to all of the parts we offer for the '66 Chevelle:

Hope this helps!

Thanks Zack
Ummm isn't there one piece not included in that picture/kit? There is a part that mounts to the driver side hub assembly (don't recall if it's all metal or if it had a ball joint) I guess if no ball joint, then not replacing it would be okay (although 1 piece not being like the others kind of stinks:)))))
My pitman arm
Brand:Classic Performance
Manufacturer's Part Number:6467PA-P
Part Type:Pitman Arms
Summit Racing Part Number:CLP-6467PA-P
Thanks

Probably because it's not a wear item!

Think i will have to pick up "128-10003" at the same time. When I lift my car, my front clip seems to move (well can't open the door), figured with a full frame that should not happen :)
Thanks

They arrived today, guess it's one thing, Summit is fast. While I would rather support my local shop, they don't carry your brand. I love new clean parts, will get it installed tomorrow and have your body mount kit stashed away for when I get sometime with the body/frame!
Actually the shorted my an outer tierod, guess it's coming form Ohio, so most everything shipped quickly :)
Thanks, have to love balljoints that don't flip flop all over!
