I'm trying to decide how to finish the underbody of my falcon. For a 51 year old car it is really clean. It spent most of its life in southern california's high desert.

The products I have at my disposal are all POR15 products. I have their degreaser, metal ready, POR15, and chassis coat paint.

I could have the body sent out for blasting, but that would be a huge pain since I don't have a trailer or a good way to load the car. Additionally I think it's clean enough to not need that. In no place is the metal rusted beyond basic surface rust. It is one of those things that needs to be seen to be believed.

Should I just wash this thing down with the degreaser, then etch with the metal ready, followed by POR15 and then topcoat with the pain? Should I skip the POR15 step? Or the etching and POR15?

I just picked this setup up. I've read good things about it. Fairly inexpensive and it seems like a lot of people use it. Im just going to scuff the underside and give er hell.

My opinion would be to remove the surface rust. Yes, it's a pain in the arse but I don't really believe you can every truly stop rust by "sealing" it with any coating.

I'm fine with removing surface rust, I guess Im just asking if you think wire brushes (hand and power) will be adequate.

Additionally, do you think I need to remove the remaining paint before I hit it with the POR15 and topcoat? In the one hand, it's lasted 51 years. On the other hand, it's 51 years old.

Just remove all the surface , I know that it is a pain in the butt .Then spray it with a good primer. them a under coat it . O r use DP90 instead. Have fun .

Hit the surface rust with a wire brush. A cup style wire brush in a drill motor. Knock off all of the loose stuff then spray the entire underbody with rust converter. This will kill the surface rust that is left and leave it ready for primer. A good epoxy primer followed up with your choice of top coats will seal it up very well. I don't like using POR15 for this because it is to hard to work with down the road. Any changes you want to make later are easy to do with paint, even if it is just a freshening up with a new coat.

Remove the rust with a spray bottle and a wire brush using something like EvapoRust...

I've used it and it works well. Just spay it on, let soak a minute (if you're patient), clean with wire brush, wipe to check progress and repeat. I am pretty particular so I repeated about 3-4 times per area and ended up with what looked like new metal before priming / coating. (Did this on all the metal I didn't cut out/replace on my car). From the looks of it you'd end up with a showroom look to yours.
