Hey guys,
I found a restored chevelle that is in pretty nice condition but the frame and registration is for a 67 chevelle (i believe he said its a 138 frame) but the body is a 66... which is the body style i prefer anyways. The price is right but i'm not sure if it's a bad idea to purchase a car like this.
my hopes are to drop a 6.0L ls engine and do suspension, and brake mods to it and it has a minitub. so it's not going to be a numbers matching car...
is this something i should shy away from? everything else about the vehicle is good except the frame matching issue

I'd double check any DMV issues.
Here in California that would be a pain in the butt to register at the DMV.

66 and 67 Chevelle frames are the same. There is no such thing as a 138 frame. There is a 138 VIN number which means the car is a true SS car. You can't register a frame, so if the registration is for a 1967 Chevelle and the registration matches the VIN number in the door jam and you are sure this is a 66, then someone probably did a VIN switch. Sounds pretty shady to me. Does the registration VIN number match the VIN number on the car?

my skylark is setting on a gs frame with a gs engine. the pre 81 vins cant be run through ncic unless entered stolen anyhow. all the sheriffs office is going check is the door vin cause thats all there is really. i run cars all day long at my job and its pointless on a pre 81 they dont even come back when run.

The registration should match the vin number in the door frame. If the registration is 67 and car is obviously a 66, RUN, you dont want the headache this could cause, up to including losing it.

If the vin is changed that would be something to run away from like Bill said. The authorities can confiscate the car until they can find the confidential or secondary vin. Definitley not anything you want to invest money in and then have it taken from you with no recourse.

thanks guys, yeah as soon as soon as bs46488 brought up the dmv I called the guy up and backed out of the deal. It was a good move, as soon as that happened I found another car that I think is a perfect platform for me to start my project on. We are just hammering out the details now.

I don't know if I'd be too concerned about a 67 frame under the 66. I had a 66 El Camino and my friend had a 67 Chevelle and both had frames that were rusted beyond repair. Both about at the front of the driver's door. The 66 Chevelle may hav had the same issue and he found a new good frame to swap out. Check out the frame on the other 66 that you found.

Thanks for the info; the frame on the other '66 i found was blasted and sprayed with POR 15. There isn't one spec of rust on the car

i wouldnt be like i said the non 17 character vins cant be run through ncic anyhow so all they can do is check to see if the car is stolen or not.
