View Full Version : What's your gas price up to?

I don't know if Precision Brakes Company is located in the worst place of the U.S. or not, but our gas just hit $2.97 a gallon for the 87 Octane! It is $3.07 for the Premium.

I am curious to know what your prices are?? They (whoever they is) say in Oregon we are going to hit $4.00 per gallon (they say it would be highly unlikely that we did not hit $4 real soon).

The local news is reporting that one particular brand of gas (in the Baltimore area) is going for $3.45 per gallon. But the avg. prices I've seen range from 2.89 (87), to 3.05 (92). It seems that the price increases every few hours.

$2.85 yesterday..

It is what it is.. the price of gas feels worse than it really is.. we are still way way cheaper than Europe and if you adjust for inflation the price of gas right now if just slightly higher than it was in 1981.

I am glad the 5mpg big block in Penny is being swapped for a 20mpg+ LS2.. woot!

The only problem with what your saying is as the costs of living increase, Fuel, Groceries, etc employers don't increase your salary in proportion. So as gas goes up and up and up and your income stays flat, it really hurts. Then the enevitable happens where people stop spending money on less essential things, no more luxury or pleasure items, then the economic growth come to a screeching halt, and after two quarters of negative of flat growth, guess what..... A Recession!
I don't care who says what... this is not a good thing!

Carlsbad CA, I saw $3.38 for premium this morning. We are always one of the most expensive areas in the country. What is worse, diesel is WAY up there too, even more than premium. I try not to get too worked up about it, not much an individual can do. Fortunately not commuting 120 miles a day anymore, it would probably get my attention a lot more if I were.

In Burlington NC it was 2.99 when I came to work this morning. When I went to lunch it was 3.09 to 3.29. During lunch I stopped at a Citgo station beside a Wendy's it was 3.79 so I drove on without even getting out of the car. The station that was 3.09 at noon was 3.19 by 12:30 I stopped there.

Everyone is panicking and I saw people filling up extra containers, I think that is only making the problem worse, less supply higher prices. Supposedly the power will be returned to the pipeline so supply should go up next week.

The prices at the station I normally get my gast at last night were:

$3.39 - 87
$3.49 - 89
$3.59 - 93

On tuesday that same station was $2.65 for regular.

I've heard of some stations as high as $4.11 in some parts of town. Also, these prices are from yesterday, I'm not sure how high it's gotten today.

I filled the diesel a few minutes ago here in Orlando and paid 2.75 for it. Diesel is about all that is here at the moment. No gas anywhere. I talked to Melinda and it is 3.29 at home.
I am going to fly home tommorrow, fly back down Monday and leave here with the car in tow Tuesday. That way hopefully things will be back to normal as far as supplies go. I hate the prices but can live with that, it's the being on the road stranded that bothers me.

Just got back in, the cheapest, a Mobil (was on the news) he left his prices at $2.69 a gallon for reular. People line up for hours yesterday and pumped him dry. He also said that when he gets a resupply, he will only raise the price about $.10 a gallon. Second to that, the local Hess was at $2.89 a gallon. Half a block away, a Stewart's (local place usually cheaper) was at $3.49 for 87! That would be $111.68 to fill the Avalanche from dry .:barf:

On my home yesterday, I noticed that the local Shell had 87 & 89 at "only" $2.89. Since there were long lines I decided not to stop.

I was near empty so I went back later to fill up, then went back again to fill my wife's vehicle as well. When I went by the same station this morning, the price had increased to $3.29.

The station was packed at 10:00 pm last night, people had brought gas cans, boats, and anything else that required fuel. The 87 was completely gone. I spoke to a woman there who told me that the last 3 stations she went to where out of gas, not sure if she meant last 3 Shell stations, or just random stations.

No, it didn't, but it did shut down a pretty good portion of our drilling and refining ability in the SE US. Also shut down several major ports and caused millions, if not billions, of dollars in damage to oil mfg. facilities. There aren't widespread shortages everywhere, but the worldwide market is going to take a beating for a while til things get somewhat sorted out. That... and the oil companies have a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders, not to us (read: No matter how much money they make, they have to keep making more. It's never enough.). Therefore, they will charge as much as the market will bear. Fact is, when it comes down to getting to work or not, our market will bear a lot.

In WA state, our prices are averaging about 2.80/regular. Our oil and gas come from Alaska, so we don't have any direct shortages, but there has been some increase

I just filled up the Tahoe and put some gas in the Camaro. And just for clarification, I'm not concerned about gas shortages, I didn't fill up for that reason. I filled up because the Camaro sits around alot(with these prices anyways) and was on empty, and I've got 300 miles to drive next week with the Tahoe.

All I have to say is OUCH. I put 25 gallons in the Tahoe for the bargain price of $3.29 a gallon for 89 octane. They were out of 87, but the price before they ran out was $3.19. This station (BP) was on the local radio stations as one of the lowest around. They're only a few miles from my house, so I figured I'd give it a shot. The lines weren't bad (2 cars a head of me), but I couldn't believe I was almost happy to pay $3.29, considering other stations were as high as $3.79.

I then went home to put some gas in the camaro for tonight, wound up paying $3.55 (93) at Sunoco. Not 100 feet down the road, Exxon's prices were $3.79, $3.89, $3.99. Sounds like price gouging to me.

I was paying $2.53 in June when I first got the Camaro (93). :crying:

The interesting thing I noticed here in WA is that there was a huge line at the Safeway charging $2.99 for regular, and across the street at the Texaco, it was $2.91, and the Texaco had hardly any business all day.

What it really boils down to is they know you'll pay it, they don't care how much it hurts as long as you do pay, and they know that you aren't going to take the bus, because frankly you just can't do it realistically in most of the US, our infrastructure just isn't set up that way.

I know a couple of the guys who live in Europe have posted their gas prices, but how far do you commute to work each day? And do you drive, or take the bus or train? Just for comparison, I have a pretty short commute here in the US, about 8 miles, or 13 kilometers each way. It isn't uncommon in my area for people to drivetriple that each way.

The price thing is very true, James. However, only if the stations remain competitive with one another. As long as they're competitive, they can charger whatever they want. For example, When I went to get gas for my Camaro before, the first station I passed was an exxon, and the prices were $3.79, $3.89, $3.99 for 87, 89, and 93 respectively. There were only 1 or two cars in the station. Less than 100 yards up the road, on the opposite side of the road (you could turn across though, no median) the Sunoco where I got my gas was packed. Prices were $3.55 for 93, and I think $3.49, $3.45 for 89 and 87. This should show the people who are price gouging that even though they're probably making $.50 a gallon, if they don't sell any gas, what's the use.

Price gouging is a huge problem here on LI. I saw one station that was $4.15 for premium. I don't care what his excuse is, there's no reason 93 should be $.60 cheaper at a station only 7 miles away.

As for the commute. My daily commute is about 28 miles each way.

yes thats one thing I don't understand.
How can you have gas stations next door to each other or across the street with big differences in Gas price. I can see 1 or 2 cents off but not like 10 cents difference.

another thing I don't understand is how can 4 of the same gas station in town all same brand be different prices. There all on high traffic areas. I'm sure there all owned by the same corporation. All got gas on the same day with the same truck.

09-02-2005, 09:20 PM
That's true Ralph, except these lemings were waiting in line to buy the more expensive gas, when across the street, it was 8 cents less a gallon. I mean, you could see the other station from the Safeway. I think they are just so conditioned that Safeway is less (which it usually is, at least near me) that they don't even check the actual price anymore.

My daily commute is around 30-35miles, and a combination og hwy/city driving. I drive a Opel Astra with a 1.8L fourbanger that gets 26-30mpg, and gasprices here just passed $7, with dark clouds in the horizon as to it going up even further...

Paddington:
The reason the octane in the US is lower than ours is the way it is measured, I think both are measured in similar variable compression engines, but how to analyze the results differ somewhat. One is RON and the other is ROZ, I don't remember which is which! The US 93oct is roughly the same as our 98oct...

OK there can be a difference from one side to the other depending on if that station is owned by one person or the corparation.IF you own your own station you can buy your gas from anyone you want, like a smaller independent company, they sell it cheaper, cheaper grade of gas also.BUT if you lease it from a corperation say like GULF OIL COMPANY like i did,i had to buy only from gulf and it was 10 cents more a gallon then from some independent company.SO there can be a small difference from one to another.Another thing WHen you say all got gas from same truck same day, that might not be true, one trucks holds 8300 gallons of gas,all have 4 compartments in them, one for reg. plus, super and diesel.I had to call in before each delivery and tell them what i need each of ,say 2000 gallons of reg. 1500 of plus 2500 of super and 2300 of diesel, that truck only delivers to my station for that delivery only.
Hopefully i explained it alittle better.

One thing to what Nitrovette said:
We owned an Exxon station in Macon, Ga. for years. The Exxon distributor owned most the other stations in town. He would sell gas at his company owned stations much cheaper than we could since he controlled the price he sold to us. We would usually be several cents higher at the pump, but he had a bigger profit margin than us. Of course he did this to force us to sell the ground to him. That is just how business works. The big guys eventually squeeze out the little guy.
Same principle and reason we don't have many mom and pop auto parts places anymore.
This however helps explain the difference in price at same branded stations. We sold out 12 years ago, but back then, for us to make 10cents a gallon on gas was a big deal. Hopefully that has changed, but gas was never a moneymaker. Don't hold high gas prices against the guys at the pumps, they have no more control than you do.
