Hi Guys,

Need a few suggestions on underhood paint. I'm replacing and/or sandblasting everything from the firewall forward in our 71 Chevelle. I'm going to leave it all stock under the hood.

What semi-gloss black paint would you suggest? I'm looking for something that's going to be easy to clean and very durable to scratching. I'm looking at SEM products now. I've had experience with POR-15 but I don't think it comes out well unless you spray it with a gun. Every time I've brushed it on I've gotten at least one or two pieces of crap in the painted area.

Suggestions and experiences would be greatly appriciated.

buy a gun it will be worth it. you can use pretty inexpensive black paint with a hardener. could add a flat additive to get the desired mix. or just shoot por 15 with a gun

I get the Eastwood chassis black. It's a matte finish already reduced and ready to spray. If you don't want to buy a gun, look into a Preval sprayer. They can be purchased at most hardware and automotive stores. I'll look for a link.

Here's the paint...comes in aerosol as well.

Here's the sprayer if you chose that route...

Eastwood also sells "underhood" black. A different gloss than the chassis black, also ready to spray. If you want to though, you can thin it with laquer thinner at a rate of 1:1

Thanks guys!

I've painted a half a dozen cars and have 4 guns now. I'm not sure I want to booth off the garage everytime I need to paint a few brackets though. I'm sure it would be worth the extra work though. I'll think I'll pick up a can of eastwood and SEM and see if I like them. (paint a piece or two then beat the crap out of it :) )

I'll probably have to bite the bullet here and do it right.

Thanks for the help.

There's a Krylon spraycan that is supposed to work well for this. Is it #1613 or something?
