Hello all,

I am planning on a 383 stroker or LS3 engine for my 1969 Camaro. I would like about 435 HP and related torque from the engine, but I want the exhaust to sound about like the 2008 LS3 Corvette that I had a couple of year's back. I wear two hearing aids and I am sensitive to too much noise.

Most muscle car exhausts that I have heard at car shows and cruise nights have been too loud.

I realize that this most likely means that I will need to fit two fairly large mufflers underneath the car. Has anyone have experience in fitting larger mufflers under a 1969 Camaro? I would appreciate any advice on specific mufflers (name & description) that fit my goals here.

Although I don't need cats in order to pass emissions in my state (1969 cars are exempt), would the addition of cats and and H pipe help quiet the exhaust note?

Thanks for your help.

Cats and H or X-pipes will help. Putting in the largest muffler possible with a packing material like that found in Dymomax Super Turbo mufflers also helps.

For your power level a 2-1/2" diameter pipe is more than enough and will also help cut down on sound. Running full tailpipes exiting the rear will direct sound aft.

Running an additional muffler system, like adding a Flowmaster crossflow muffler in front of the fuel tank, could also be done but who knows what the power loss would be.

Another thing to be concerned about is the intake noise. An open intake can make a lot of noise. Having an intake plumbed on an OE late model style box will go a long way toward quieting things down.
