... lot of progress this year.

Looking for a body shop, thought I had it figured out, but having my doubts. Looking for recommendations in the DFW area.

So far I have North Texas Customs in Wylie, Wilson Auto in Garland, and Mohr Restorations in NRH.

Attached is a picture from a few years back:81905

My custom gauges:81907

And my new intake manifold:81906

Link to my build page on a Mopar site: http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=134292 (http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=134292)

Here are pictures from today, it is ready for body and paint. Just need to remove the wheel well trim, headlight buckets, and finish scraping some seam sealer. Everything else that can be has been removed. Rear suspension can be removed in about five minutes. The hood will not be making the trip to the body shop...

Go talk to rodney.

I have known Rod for a few years. I was not aware he did any body and paint himself, I was under the impression he had that done "somewhere nearby". North Texas Customs is about two blocks away. Am I wrong in that assumption?

... OK, just went through your build thread, I was wrong, looks like Rod does have a spray booth and does all that other work on site!!! Maybe it is just the media blasting that gets done by the North Texas Customs guys. Guess I need to go have a chat with Rod.

Love the old Weiand TR and the overall in your face of that engine. Car should be dangerous for sure.

I think the Weiand with the EFI throttle bodies will just barely squeeze under a six pack hood.

It was plenty dangerous as it was. Ported iron heads, oversize stainless valves, Edelbrock RPM, and a Ultradyne solid lifter cam. Car has a 727, a Coan 11" Pro-Street converter, 3.90 gear with a locker. Engine was putting out about 550hp at the crank.

I wanted to go "up a notch". Slightly bigger cam, roller, more lift, ported aluminum heads, multi-port EFI and a manual transmission. This was my first big block Mopar with an auto, my previous cars had manual transmissions and I miss that. I will be visiting a few shops this week, it is time for body and paint.

Who did you end up going with for paint?

mmosley
10-27-2013, 12:20 PM
www.rodscarcraft.com

Same as Randy (icemanrd19)

I have seen a few cars done there and the work looks to be top notch. I went over and looked at Randy's car and talked to him about his experience. I have known Rodney for a few years but had never been inside the shop before, I did not know he did body and paint. For some reason I was under the impression he farmed the work out to another shop down the street. Probably because a year or so ago I had discussed media blast with him and he had mentioned that was done elsewhere.

My experience so far with Rodney has been great. He has no issue with me coming occasionally to check up on things and our tastes and preferences on the build and style have many similarities. I have not had any significant difference in opinion on what has been needed or direction.

Friday when I dropped in there were five first gen Camaros in the shop. Other than that it is a great place (just kidding guys).

Next on the agenda, some metal work:

Inner fender repair to damage from previous owner "modifications"
Radiator support modification to add lower cross brace
Trunk floor modification and mounting frame to accommodate and support new fuel tank
Rear wheel well mini tub repair / clean up
Smooth firewall and remove any un-needed holes in the engine compartment
Add fire wall between trunk and passenger compartment
Transmission tunnel modification and reinforcement for six speed
Replace rear spring mounts
Add sub frame connectors
Add torque boxes
Repair driver's side door jamb
Repair driver's side rocker, needs about a 6 inch section replaced
Repair driver's side quarter panel
Create exhaust cut outs in rear valance
Align and gap fenders, doors, trunk lid, hood

And then paint... may be a little while. Meanwhile, the transmission cross member, console top plate and transmission have arrived. Also received a new front valance today. Still need the bell housing.

Metal work is underway. Sam is pretty good at this stuff.

Torque boxes are being installed, post leaning against the car is one of the subframe connectors:

Torque boxes were added at the factory on some big block cars and on convertibles. One way to think of them is like gussets.

That has been the plan. The images Jason sent included wheel trim. Above are my two favorite wheel options with and without. My wife prefers the second one down (satin centers, polished hoops, no wheel trim).

TUET11009 T56 Magnum six speed, it is between the black wheels or the satin... yes, no trim. Paint code WA9529. It is a little darker than the rendering suggests. Same color as this Mustang: https://www.pro-touring.com/threads/20874-68-Mustang-Coupe-Just-Finished

Really know how to hurt a Mopar guy don't 'ya.

Yes it is a similar design, but No, Randy makes it specifically to fit the lower valance of the '67-'69 Barracuda. He just recently added this to his offerings, I believe I have the second one he sold prior to him listing them officially.

Hood closes now. The air cleaner that came with the throttle body conversion was too tall to clear the hood. Had a one off six pack air cleaner made for the car, the base will be painted black and the top Hemi orange with a 440 6bbl decal. For car show purposes I will probably take the air cleaner off and display it in the trunk and put a lexan cover over the throttles.

About another week to go on body work before primer, blocking and then finally paint.

Rear tires are on. 18x10 with a 295/40-18. I tested with a 1" spacer, at that point the tire still clears the stock lip by 1/2" on the outside. On the inside clearance is 2-1/4" at the closest point. 335 will fit easily, 345 would be tight.

The guy tried to order the right stuff, between him and the vendor it somehow got mixed up. Rodney was not involved in ordering the rear end or wheels but is now helping the guy resolve the issue with the supplier.

I was at the shop Saturday from about 8:30am till about 1:30pm... I was the token non-Camaro owner. My 11 year old and I installed the rear tires, swapped the spindles L to R, installed 3" studs on the front and took a few pictures.

mmosley

I made a 1" spacer for the rear out of 5/16" spacer and some washers to mock up the tire to simulate a wider wheel/tire combo relative to the outside lip.

Minimum clearance at the outside on the rear went to 1/2" from the stock wheel lip. The stock wheel lip is nearly 1" wide, it will be getting rolled to provide a little more room. Probably go ahead and run a 1/2" spacer with this wheel and tire, which would take it in 1/2" vs. the pictures.

Here is a picture of the inside clearance at the closest point. At the top inside there is more room.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

That 295 just disappeared into the wheel well. According to Falken the 295/40 is 11.8" section and 27.2" tall. The Michelin Pilot Sport 345/30-19 is advertised at 13.8" section and 27.2" tall. That may just barely fit. With glass, gas, people and the interior the rear end will sit down a bit more. Tank is 32 gallons, I had icemanrd19 sit on the rear bumper (he weighs about the same as a full tank) and the lip was almost level with the top of the tire.

Block sanding is done, final prime on the fenders, doors, decklid, header panel, front valance, and hood are done.

Put the car back on the Rotisserie today so they can do the final primer and finishing work for the inside, underneath, and outside of the body. My son Alec and I went to the body shop at 8am, pulled the engine, transmission, front suspension, brakes, wheels, rear axle, and rear suspension. Put the car on the rotisserie, removed the wiper motor and a few other odds and ends still on the car. We left at 11:15, ate some lunch and went to a car show...
Sure makes things easier when you have a lift and air tools you can use.

First picture shows the 2x2 cross brace Sam installed. We started w/ the XV brace, modified it to the correct width, raised it to match the height of the factory piece, cut pockets in the corners to clear the cross flow radiator, put nutserts into the front for the latch support to bolt to, and added stand offs to the corners for the front valance attachment points. Sam also cleaned up the edges where the radiator opening had been expanded to fully expose my 27-1/2"x19" radiator core.

Second picture shows the engine-transmission-suspension assembly which drops out as one complete unit with the removal of a whole 12 bolts. Pulled it out in about 30 minutes, and only took that long because an 11 year old was doing much of the wrenching.

Third picture is of the car after the fact back on the rotisserie.

Some shuffling at the shop to try to keep all the hands busy... resulted in not much progress this week on my car. Pictures from last Saturday. Final primer is done. I cleaned out my garage and took a bunch of loose parts home that they did not need for fitment any longer. Bottom, inside and jambs should be painted next week.

Tomorrow they will do the bottom with the same color mixed with a bed liner material. Then they will paint the doors, fenders, trunk lid, hood, header panel, valance other odds and ends parts. Then they will paint the outside / top of the body. First the stripes, then the green, then the clear. After that I assume cut and buff. Probably be there for another two weeks. I will post pictures. PM me your number, remind me what your name is again, and I can text message you when it is at whatever stage you want to see. At the end it may be there a day or so before I take it home. The only part from this point forward I am farming out is the headliner install, some of the trim polish, the front windshield install and rear glass. I will do all the mechanical and assembly myself with my two sons. In a prior life I was an ASE certified master tech and have plenty of experience working on cars, just never learned any of the body / paint side of things.

We are both moving at a snails pace, since we are both budget limited it will be quite the "race" to the finish. Your car may have paint... but mine will soon enough and I am an engine and transmission ahead of you overall. But you can probably buy a crate LS3 for the cost of my EFI computer and harness, and you already have pretty wheels, so $-wise we are probably close to even on our distance to the finish line.

Here soon i should be back on it pretty good unless another kid comes lol

Yeah... be careful what you ask for there. I had a pair of 3-1/2 year olds when I moved here. The following summer I found some time to work on the car and we even took it to the race track. We went to Disney World for their fifth birthday. Magically - eight months later we had a third child, my second boy. When he was about a year old I stopped driving the car because I needed to repair the wiring harness. After he turned four my older son, now eleven, and I started disassembling the car for paint. My youngest is now five. At this rate we are hoping to have the car driving the summer he turns seven.

Front seats

brake lines
rear ebrake
speakers/ cd player

battery relocation kit
Everything else i have sitting upstairs

Pretty much when I'm ready to pull the trigger on a killer engine/ trans deal i will go full force on it. Im really starting to lean towards dropping a ls1/t56 in there so i can get it on the road.

One evening in Cedar Park, Texas about half the local Mopar club was at one guys house helping him rebuild his suspension. After we got them started I started giving guys rides in the Barracuda. A friend of mine was riding in the car and as I rolled into full throttle in first gear I heard a loud popping noise coming from the passenger seat. The pressure from the acceleration of the seat against him had popped his back. I heard it over the car's engine it was so loud! I stopped the car and asked if he was OK. He had this silly grin on his face and said "Yes, never better. You just saved me a trip to the chiropractor."

Right...I just looked at my can and it is the same code.

WA9539 is the lighter shade. Some year Corvettes called this Polo Green also, so it is better to know the paint code than the name. Name is a marketing thing. The new Corvette color "Lime Rock Green" is a very beautiful dark green color, GM paint code is WA136X. I was tempted. It is more Emerald green in the direct sun light. Kevin and I got a chance to look at his car and a new Stingray in Lime Rock Green a few months back at Cars n Coffee. When it was a little dark and overcast I wasn't sure they were different, but in full sun it became obvious. I would call the WA9529 more a "Forest Green" which also makes it a very close match to the original "GG1" Forest Green on my car.

I need to find one of those consoles, Love it, and holy sweet mother you have a fuel tank!

"Standard" E-85 compatible w/ an A1000 Aeromotive pump and controller. I plan to make a false floor for storage and to separate the fuel system from the interior. So the only thing visible when you open the trunk will be the filler neck. Maybe a light c-channel frame to support it and a half dozen dzus fasteners to hold it down. Cover it with carpet.

The consoles are not that hard to find, standard A-body. Damned heavy though. Mine needs painting as you can see from the picture. The auto and 4-speed consoles only functionally differ by the top plate. For the 4-speed cars they trim the side and add a fiberglass bulge, but I don't need that for a T-56 Magnum since the shifter is on top, not the side. I did have to relocate the console back some to get it to line up with the shifter location. The stock shifter is long and has some funny bends. Because the console is moved back if I was running the wide factory buckets I would not be able to slide them forward. With the narrower aftermarket seats it is not an issue. With the stock seats I sit just about all the way back anyway so I was not too worried about it. The front top plate in the picture is new, and I have a new top plate for the console door and a new ash tray door (square hole behind the shifter). I was planning on making a simple plate for a few power accessory ports and auxiliary input to plug in a phone or ipod under the ash tray door. I have a few power outlets in my tool box, bought them at the Dodge dealer, Jeep parts I think. They even have the plastic cap that says 12V 20A. Goal on the interior is, with the exception of the seats make it look as stock as possible. Stock console, stock appearing gauges, stock looking shifter handle and knob. Only the Mopar guys might pick up on some of the subtle differences. Like this tach - looks stock, right? I think the stock A-body tach for that year stops at 6k and it definitely did not have a 6500 redline.

I should have asked Santa for a Nutsert tool this year. Sure would make things a lot nicer.

Nice progress. Cars looking good

Thanks.

I just put in an order with ABE for about $3k worth of Nutserts and tooling for work. For small volume jobs, especially if you are only going to do 1-2 sizes the cheaper hand tool should be adequate. You should do a test fit to see how tight or how many turns you need to do to get the correct barrel compression.

Mike i have some money that i found under a mattress. Im looking to buy some items. Anything that you are planning to buy soon for a group discount? I have about 5k to blow

Nothing that would really work for a group discount. Only thing I am doing anytime soon is the AC and maybe make a set of headers. Might buy a TIG welder, it has been about ten years since I last did any significant welding. I'll have to check with my wife, I think she has one at work I can use. If that is the case, at the most I may buy some purge gas and my own torch. Lot's of little bits and pieces otherwise as I assemble things, nothing significant. The seats and shocks I will be buying at the end. I have most everything else, just need the time to work on it.

Four on the floor - tires that is!

Completed the driver's side suspension and brakes today. Set the car down... tweaked the ride height. Driver's side was so much easier than the passenger side. No second guessing or thinking. I also took a flat file to the hex on each end of the t-bar to knock down the powder coat a little, that made it a lot easier to knock the bar in.

Still a long way to go but great to be making visual progress. Nice to have the car on the floor and rolling again.

Did not work on the car much in May and none in June. My dog has been sick for the past few months. Last week he had a surgery, seemed better, but by yesterday the combination of it all was just too much for him and he was too weak. Bottom line is I lost my buddy and have no extra money for a while. I will polish out all the stainless, install some of the wiring, get some other small stuff done in the meantime. I'll have to wait until the end of the year before I can do the last few big things that need to be done (like exhaust).

Finished with most of the suspension and such. Did some fitment under the hood, installed a fan. Washed the car, took some pictures:

OK, lots of details are new.

Found a pair of Mickey Thompson early run non-logo valve covers.

Modified them to have an o-ring seal fill cap and AN connections over baffles for the oil separator / breather.

Powder coated valve covers and intake.

Bought drive pulley setup, water pump pulley, power steering pulley, and alternator pulley from Jones racing.

Water pump is Meziere belt driven remote. PS pump
is Corvette large bearing style with bypass pressure set to match needs of the PS box.

Tensioner for V6 Ford; alternator from a V8 Dodge pickup; belt for a 2023 Corvette.

Still have some prototype work to finish for the water pump and PS pump brackets.
