Hello all,

I am still working on selecting the right parts for my 383 sbc (non LS) engine build. I am looking for around 420 HP and 400+ torque with a mild hydraulic roller cam, decent heads, headers, and four barrel carb (perhaps a FAST fuel injected throttle body/carb later), 9.5 compression ratio, and running on pump gas.

Are AFR 195 street eliminator heads overkill for my goals? Is a CNC ported head required?

Thanks for your help.

John T.

Out of the box will work great. I have 195's on my 383 with .520 lift roller, and flat tops. 89 octane. You'll most likely get more HP and TQ than your numbers. I did.

Agreed. You'll get more and you will like it.

go to AFR's website and look at their dyno combos. they give cylinder head, cam, carb combos and measured results. For example the AFR 180s with the 280 comp cam with .480 lift and it made 490 hp and 500 ft lb. you could go with a milder cam like the 270 with .470 lift which i have in my 355 and get an even milder idle.

Hey John.

I'm running a 383 (388 actually) in my Nova that has 200 Iron Eagle heads, Comp 268h cam, Air Gap, and 9.6:1. It makes 315whp and 355wtq through an automatic on 87 octane.

I'm sure with a newer-design head and a roller cam you can easily exceed your goal.

TonyKim....great idea. Forgot to recommend that. Lots of great info on the AFR site. Additionally, I have a set of BluePrint Heads I got from Jegs at about 40% cheaper. On the engine dyno made 419hp/440tq. with the same bottom.
