Alright, this has been a long time coming! Let me try to give a quick run down of the history that leads up to this thread. Basically, my wife and I decided to get back into the car hobby in 2002 after a 15 year absence (since high school). So, while I was in Northern California doing a National Guard communication school we decided to buy our current 66 Chevelle. Well, one thing led to another and we wanted a spot to store it and some parts cars so we bought a rental house with a two car detached garage on a one acre lot less than a mile from the subdivision where we lived. In 2003ish we built (myself, Deb and the kiddos) a new 28x44' two story shop on the back of the lot and have been working out of there ever since. The only real problem with that arrangement came when we bought a house and property 30 minutes away and moved into that in 2006. A lot has happened with the rental property over the years, but all that is important is that we finally sold it on contract back in April and that is allowing us to build our shop here at our house. Whew! lots of history in a reasonably short paragraph.

OK, so this will be the build thread of building the shop. Deb and I have some building experience and will be doing most of the work ourselves with the exception of the foundation and maybe a few other things that will just save time and headaches in the long run. Obviously family and friends will be helping too as we move forward.

We would love to hear your questions and comments on what you would do to make it a better shop, but remember, we are regular people with regular jobs (a couple each) and at the end of the day, we want this thing to be under roof and usable inside of our budget. Just like everything else we do, we will make improvements as we go.

We're doing a build thread on pro-touring.com, chevelles.com and lateral-g.net since we have good friends on all of them.

Here are the basics:
40x76'
stick framed 2x6" walls 12' ceilings in the main work area
40x26 area that will be sectioned off for machine and wood shop, storage and a paint area
40x26 upstairs that will be used for storage and possible future living area
two lifts, one two post and one four post
one 16x9' overhead door and one 36" service door
electric and wood heat (A/C is part of my dream plan)

I'm envious! Sounds like it will be an awesome shop when you're done. Be sure to pull in adequate power... at least a 200A service.

One comment on A/C (I've air conditioned my shop -- necessary here in Florida). Have a look at mini-splits systems. They are cheaper than a conventional forced air setup, plus you can do all the installation yourself.

Here's what I'm using:

Looks good Tom. I would suggest rethinking the door option. A single door to access three lifts is tight. Even with the lifts at an angle, it kills all the usable space behind them, and it really doesn't look as if you have the depth to make the turn anyway. I'd suggest three doors, at least two, to access the lifts. This gives you a "free" flat stall behind each lift. Might want to consider 12' doors (minimum 10') width. 8' sounds big until you try to "cut" in. I just finished my new shop and can post some pics if you'd like.

John's right on the 200A minimum service, but A/C is still a luxury in Florida shops!! I'd love to have it. John how big is your shop and what's your ceiling height? What size units are you using? I use two Mitsu mini splits in the office and apartment and love them!

Yeah what those guys said^^^ LOL

As a Journeyman Electrician I have to ask these guys recommending a MINIMUM 200A service....what in the world are you guys using that would require more than a 200A service in a home shop? There's only going to be a few things in use at once.

Ill be keeping an eye in here for ideas....good luck with the build

I have to ask these guys recommending a MINIMUM 200A service....what in the world are you guys using that would require more than a 200A service in a home shop?In general, you get service boxes in 100A increments, right? So I'm saying not to get 100A, but step up to 200A.

What kind of things might be going on simultaneously in your shop? Let's go through a list and see where we end up:

Refrigerator -- 15A
Freezer -- 15A
Lights -- 30A
Garage door opener -- 15A
TIG welder on aluminum -- 70A
Torch chiller -- 10A
Compressor -- 30A
Lift -- 25A
A/C -- 20A
Heater -- 40A
Mill -- 40A
Lathe -- 40A
Various 110V power tools -- 15A.

If you're welding aluminum, with the A/C running, the fridge and freezer running, the compressor kicks on, with lots of lights and torch chiller going, and somebody opens the garage door, while somebody else is running the mill or cutting some metal... you're well over 100A, and coming up on 200A. Plus a 200A service will have enough space for all circuits you'll need for multiple welding outlets, 20A 110V circuits and tons of lights.

Typically, you get one chance to pull the electrical service in. Just sayin': don't skimp there.

I'll second the door upgrade suggestion. I'd go a minimum of 12' tall, and I'd put it in the middle of the wall not the one side. Just think if you or someone else might ever want to put an RV or big boat inside the shop.

How tall are your side walls? I made mine 10' tall and was able to get a 12' tall door in the center of my front elevation because of the way I designed my trusses.

I also highly suggest blow in foam insulation. It costs about twice as much as normal fiberglass bat insulation but it's worth every penny over the years.

Have fun with the build, it took me almost 10 years to get mine close to done, to where I could work in it more than on it. Worth every minute of labor though.

Thanks John! We'll definitely have a 200A service and had actually looked into getting 3 phase back to the shop, but since we're 1800' off of the main road the price was astronomical. Good advice on the A/C option, I plan to look into it especially for the machine area.

I appreciate what you guys are saying about doors, but that part of the plan has already past. For one, the placement on the property doesn't allow for more doors based on the slope and property line. We had originally thought about a second door but with our current shop we value wall space and the multiple doors has always been more of an irritant rather than a convenience. As far a height, a standard door is 7', our current shop has 8' and we're planning on 9' for this one. We definitely don't see a RV or large boat in our future. We did however look into the height of a two car open trailer with cars still on it and the 9' was more than adequate. ;-)

I don't know what to tell you Chris. I think we're always on the brink of complete failure and nervous breakdowns. lol All kidding aside, Deb and Sam are flat out hard workers and we get Kaytlin's time when she's not at work or school too. I'm just a lucky guy I guess...

Yep, I have surfed it multiple times and thought about a build thread there too, but since this is a pretty non-remarkable build I decided against it. I will spend some more time on there next time I'm at the firehouse. Although, sometimes great ideas lead to spending too much money. ;-)

With your army connections I bet you could watch and find a good surplus deal on a 3 phase generator. It would allow for more effective use than a converter and I would imagine a lot cheaper. When I was working in TV I went to Harris transmitter plant. They had different generators for each power standard around the world. I ask why... Cheaper and easier for anything that is ony occasionally used. I'm also a long way off the road and this made sence to me so if and when I ever need three phase this is my plan...

Looks good. I don't see any floor drains though. Are you sloping the garage area floor to the overhead door?

Good foundation like that is a perfect recipe for a building that should last a long LONG time. Much prefer a build like this over the typical pole barn design.

I see a sewer drain out the back side, are you tying into an existing septic system or putting a stand alone small tank in?

Yep Lance, just got the same question over on chevelles.com so I will copy and paste my reply.

We have a floor drain in place for the painting area that is opposite the machine area. Note that I said painting area, not booth. I'm not trying to lead anyone to believe I have any painting skills. It drains to daylight and we can wash cars in that area too. We did put in a sewer rough in for a future connection to a septic system and also roughed in for a water line. Down the road for sure. Right now being able to walk up to the house (or woods) will be much easier than the running to the gas station that we are used to. I can probably gain two hours of work out of Deb everyday not making that trip!

I asked the concrete guy to make the floor as close to perfectly flat as possible with no slope. A lot of people have said we would have been better off financially to build a pole building, but framing is what we know and wanted to stick with it. I think we're building it to withstand some hard use and weather.

Agreed on running a good sized service out there. I read "minimum" as in he might not get by on a 200A service. A 200A service would be plenty assuming hes not going install a grey iron foundry in there??!!

I did a poured wall foundation on mine, 36" footers with an 8" stem wall...then put 9' stud walls up on that.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/09/Outbuildingphotos0006a-1.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/Outbuildingphotos0006a.jpg.html)

You can see how I ended up with a 12' tall door with only 9' walls.

I ran a 12' floor drain down the middle plumbed to daylight and tried to slope the floor to it from all sides...which you can see here. You can also see the blown in foam insulation.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/09/garagemahal3-1.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/garagemahal3.jpg.html)

What ended up was the floor was level about 10' out from all of the walls, then sloped to the drain. Okay I guess, but not really what I planned. I can see now the advantage of a perfectly level floor. If I'm brooming or squeegeeing the water off of the floor anyway, might as well have a level floor for other reasons.

10 years later, I ended up putting an apartment in the back of the shop that my Dad lives in.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/09/DSC01529-1.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/Father%20in%20Law%20Quarters/DSC01529.jpg.html)

In case you didn't know, no matter how big you build them, they are never big enough... Seems the mores pace you have, the more crap accumulates inside them.

Good luck with the rest of the build, I love the progress so far.

Holy crap, that was a lot of stone to get to grade. I see what you were talking about, looked level, until they started grading. Man I hate buying stone just to cover it up, CR6 is damn near concrete prices around here.

That is going to be an awesome building.

I don't know how it's done in the US since building methods are different from what I know, but will the concrete floor have reinforcement or is the floor supported by the gravell? Overhere usually it's like this:

Nothing that fancy Martin. Our concrete will just be poured on the washed pea gravel fill with a visqueen vapor barrier separating the two. 4" thick except where the posts for the two post lift will be. I'm getting ready to remove some gravel to make that area about 8" thick.

What is the reason for the cement blocks as the foundation walls over just doing solid cement? Is it just price or is there another reason for it, knowing my luck someone would back a car into the lower side of the shop and break the blocks and then the gravel would slowly leak out till I got it fixed. And any plans for some heated floors? Its adds about $800 per 1000 sq ft here or flooring.

Depends on how much $ you want to spend here really. This is how our floors were done but I have seen it done with much less reinforcement as Tom is doing many times as well.

Looking good Tom. Last year I built a 40x60 shop and was built to match our house. It was considerably more expensive than a pole barn or metal building but I don't regret it a bit. She is insulated quite well and has been plumbed for restroom and wash area with a drain. The best part is I wired it for internet and in ceiling speakers. Absolutely the best thing for enjoying your tunes while working. Seating in my shop typing this right now.

Looking forward to the progress pix.

Here's the less than cautious clown that drove too close to the foundation and broke out some of the blocks. A few years ago I may have lost my cool, but in the end it would have solved nothing. The flat work guy came up with a solution for the repair and we agreed it was the best option.

Our trip to LS Fest was cut short mid day on Friday due to my part time job. Once that obligation was met we took advantage of the situation to pick up lumber and start to lay walls out.

Hey Tom....I wish I would have told you earlier, but my last shop was 2 blocks higher on the inside to 1) raise the wall height and also I realized that it made it easy to wash it out. When we built a shop at our new house it was suppose to have the blocks higher than the floor and when I realized what they we're doing they poured it like yours. It's not that big of a deal but you have to use a mop to clean the floors. If you're doing something to help with this PLEASE let me know. I painted my rails in there the other day and wet the floor but I was doing all I could to keep it off the sheetrock!!!!

My framing skills are a little rusty, we had off and on showers until about 2 and my whole family dropped by (I'll never complain about that) so we didn't get as much done as we had hoped, but any progress is good progress!

Hey Tom, I'm Dave H , and met you and your son at RTMC, I had the silver 1979 Z28. I just finished building a 30x40 garage and I agree that you'll wish you had more entry points than 1 door. I watched I'm pretty tight with money, but my biggest saver was calling around to garage door installers and asking if they had any hail damaged doors they had removed ... net result was 3 top of the line fully insulated Clopay doors for the cost of installing them(I saved about $4500). My building is stick built and I used scissor truss's for 1 bay to allow for a lift, but only have 10' walls. I have an upstairs for storage that I almost didn't do.....THAT would have been a mistake. I hope to see you guys at RTTH if you can make it. My wife says I should have added living quarters... she was right.

Don't tempt me! You might find yourself carving a corner of that property off for my shop (I won't need a house I'll just live in the shop it's where I'm happy :) ) Seriously I haven't been building anything saving for the moving fund to get out of this jacked up state.

I'm very jealous !

Looks like you pulled the broken blocks out, formed it up and poured concrete in where the damaged blocks were while pouring the floor to fix the damage?

They do a similar foundation type here where they dig trenches and pour the footers, foundation walls, and floor all at the same time...(I can't think of what it's called off the top of my head, "trench pour" I think) it's commonly done and this fix (if that is what you did) should work just fine. Hopefully it's reinforced with a little bit of rebar to hold it all together.

Are you stick framing in the rafters too? That is ambitious... We chose the easy way out with designed trusses...sure made framing go a LOT faster though. We started standing walls up Friday afternoon and Sunday evening were sheeting the roof. Good thing too as it was the weekend before rifle deer season and all of the guys helping me were hunters... Had it not got done that weekend, might not have got done until spring.

Good luck with the build, keep posting pics!!!

I always think we should be making more progress than we do, but a couple of jobs, two cars to maintain and a buddies to work on and there are still only 24 hours in a day just limits us...

Deb and Sam getting it done. Don't bother with your safety comments on our work crew, I can't control everything! We're doing well with safety glasses, but Deb in flip flops is beyond my control.

Somehow I keep thinking that I am doing pretty good with updates, but apparently I fell behind again. Work has been demanding but we're still making pretty decent progress. All our car projects need attention, but the buyer of our former shop indicated that he will soon have the remainder of the money and want it sooner than later so it's thrash time to get this place under roof.

We left Goodguys Indy early on Sunday so we could get home and get some work done. The last of the wall construction was building the two 4' walls on each side of the garage door and install the header. We used our John Deere to lift the header to 8' (max lift of the bucket) while Sam and I lifted each end the remaining foot. All was well until we shoved the last side in. Even though I had never done it before, I used construction adhesive in the pockets and that made things very slippery. Well... As we were shoving the second side in, the first side slid out and bounced out of the tractor bucket and smashed the hood of the poor John Deere. Also glanced off Sam's head, but he's fine. After we all settled down we were able to install it with a few more safety measures in place.

Rained all day, but Deb, Sam and I were able to get the stairs completed today. Normally we build stairs at the completion of a project, but I figured with all the work that needs to be done upstairs this would save us time in the long run. The guy I worked for framing houses many years ago never taught me to build stairs, but I watched him more times than I can count and luckily I picked up a few things.

Thought these pictures might give a better perspective of the height of the trusses. They are two pieces and we will attach the top once they are stood. Because we are going with a metal roof the truss engineers talked us into using pole barn trusses at 6' on center. Definitely not what I like, but they really wanted us to go 9' on center but I just couldn't agree to that. Of course the two story section will be a rafter system.

It took a little work, but we were able to shove two trusses up to the second floor. Luckily Kaytlin's new father-in-law pulled up as we were doing the first one. Great guy and incredibly hard worker!

We used a skid loader with a ram attachment to set our trusses. Hooked a strap to the top of the truss and the end of the ram, lifted it up, drove the loader into place with a guy on each end of the truss with a rope, raised it up, had 2 more guys one on each wall nailing the trusses in place, then on to the next one. Ours were on 24" centers though, so a LOT more of them. Started at 7 am, set the last truss in place at 11 am. Spent the rest of the day tying everything in place and started on sheeting the roof. The tips of the trusses are separate pieces to make trucking the trusses onto the site easier, sure adds a lot of work though.

Looks good so far, doing the work yourself is hard but well worth it in the end. Plus it's quality family bonding time.

Thanks Lance,
We have plenty of experience with 24" O.C. trusses and 16" O.C. rafter systems, but this 6' deal is going to add a whole lot more thought. I should be able to rally a few National Guard guys, more family and of course Deb and the kids to make it happen.
As far as doing the work ourselves, I totally agree with you about the family thing and the satisfaction but probably the biggest reason we do our own work when possible is just the financial aspect of it. Simple math says we can afford a much larger shop doing it ourselves. Plenty of sore muscles, gray hair and edgy tempers, but we wouldn't trade it for anything in the world!

The rafters are 26' long including the tail overhang, the actual span is only 20' though with the 8/12 pitch. Connecting to the ridge board will just be nailed from both sides, tied together just below the peak with a 2x6 and again below that with a 16' 2x6. Where the rafters set on the wall they have "bird mouths" cut in them to let them set down on the wall. The trusses over the open area are wooden pole barn trusses 6' on center.

Thanks for the compliment on the family! I am a very lucky man!

We had been storing the wagon in the new shop while we were getting it ready for Bowler Transmission's "A day at the strip" autocross. Well, I needed to pull it out to get ready to load. The virgin concrete was just begging for some tire marks....

Just a quick update with some pictures. Finishing the rafters seemed to take forever and now putting up the purlins for the metal roof on the 16" on center rafters is crazy tedious. But, it all has to get done...

I had family help with all the rafters except the last four. I never want to try that again by myself!

And here is where we were as of last night. Tough to see upstairs but we started putting in the ceiling joists to tie the rafters together and give it more stability before moving on.

It helps create Space for airflow... Preventing condensation and possible mould growth. It let's the sofit (area behind the gutters ) flow air to the roof peak. While still allowing the roof to be insulated and finished on the inside

Sam and I are on our way back from a Chevelle road trip to Goodguys Charlotte and he's driving so I thought I would do a quick update.

Setting trusses has been a bigger job than we had hoped. With the help of a couple of young guys from my National Guard unit, Kaytlin's new father-in-law and of course Deb and Sam it is really not hard to get them lifted up in place, but running the purlins for the metal roof takes forever!

Yep, I've been meaning to update the build thread for a long time now and couldn't quite get to it. I have figured out the problem though. During the summer/fall when we stopped working at 6-8 pm we still had plenty of light so I could get decent pictures and update what we had just done. So, now it gets dark at 5 pm and we work until we can't see anymore and then clean up. At that point, we can't get updated pictures so I don't feel like showing stuff that is even one day behind. Oh well, just how my short circuited brain works...

Lots of things slowing us down including jobs, weather and moving out of the old shop but we're still pushing forward even in the bad weather.

First set of pictures is moving out of the old shop. It was 28x44', two stories and we built it right at ten years ago. Minus a couple of trips overseas, we have been working in it for that long. Before we started going to P-T events and while we were building the 66 we traveled the country picking up Chevelle parts cars and of course just stored massive amounts of parts that we would probably never use. And honestly, it seems like since we put the 66 on the road in 2010 it has been one whirlwind thrash after another. I say all that to say the shop was cluttered and not easy to move. Even though I had a lot of friends offer to help, I only bugged a few when the time came. Deb's parents did come down a few days early for Thanksgiving with the purpose of helping us move. We abused that relationship to the max... Great in-laws and incredibly hard workers!

On to what people really care about. When we first started building, each update showed real progress. I don't think anything will look too exciting until we get the roof on...

One of the most recent. Sam's friendly wave as we finished sheeting the gable. That would be one big ugly side if we just sided it, but our plan is to come out 22' with a lesser pitch roof that will be 22' wide. It will help break things up and be a nice place to park and work on decent days.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/12/DSC09627_zpsb11ff112-1.jpg (http://s205.photobucket.com/user/tommycomfort/media/New%20Garage%20at%20the%20house%20in%20Mooresville/DSC09627_zpsb11ff112.jpg.html)

Now that all the trusses are up you can get a good idea of how tall the 12' ceilings will be.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/12/DSC09624_zpsec6834a3-1.jpg (http://s205.photobucket.com/user/tommycomfort/media/New%20Garage%20at%20the%20house%20in%20Mooresville/DSC09624_zpsec6834a3.jpg.html)

Metal roofing for the complete shop. We really thought this would be a couple of two foot stacks of material, but this is enough for the whole thing. 25' 4" long and hauling it on our 20' trailer was entertaining. Negative tongue weight made for a long trip home.

Thanks for the update Tommy. Looks like you are making pretty good progress.

Your big end wall is pretty close to the same size as the ones on the front and back on my shop. Curious, did you use a truss on the top of the end wall you framed in or did you frame the top of the end wall in by hand?

Reason I ask is we used trusses for both ends sitting on top of the walls and we played hell trying to keep the wall\truss joint from flexing in and out after it was up. I think the 2x4s on the end truss being flat not perpendicular like the wall below it led to a weakness that let the wall flex in and out. Not long after mine was framed up, I was inside the shop talking on the phone while leaning up against the back wall, and the wind outside was blowing about 25 mph out of the South. The freaking wall moved about 2" in and out with the wind gusts while I was leaning up against it... :seizure: Having the garage door right in the center of my wall didn't help but still it was so huge on basically no support on the inside, the wind pressure would make the wall flex horizontally at the wall \ truss joint and vertically at the middle of the garage door.

I built a stiff back and ran it along the end truss above the joint and then put a bunch of stiffeners along the two inward trusses attached to the end truss and that helped a lot, but it was still out of plumb and would still move when the wind really blew.

This is what it looked like not long after framing it up.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/12/Outbuildingbeforefoama-1.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/Outbuildingbeforefoama.jpg.html)

and from the outside

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/12/DSC00788-1.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/DSC00788.jpg.html)

In this picture you can see the stiff back on the wall, the supports I ran from the trusses to the end wall, and the chain and come along I used to pull the middle of the wall the 2" in it was bowed out when I built the apartment along the back wall of the shop.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/12/DSC01312-1.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/LSVLance/media/House%20Pictures/Father%20in%20Law%20Quarters/DSC01312.jpg.html)

Once we had the ceiling of the apartment\loft floor joists in and the 3\4" plywood down, we pulled the wall tight up against the framing and secured it from the outside with a bunch of long screws and it stayed tight and hasn't moved since.

Only reason I'm bringing this up is to relate what we went through with a somewhat similar designed end wall and to hopefully help you from having the same problems. That is a LOT of wall and it catches a bunch of wind if the wind blows.

Shop looks great! Did you move everything out of the old shop into the back part of the new shop for now?

So, the big news is that we made the decision about a month ago to pay a contractor to finish the roof. Of course the plan would be that he came right away and seal it up, but snow, high winds and sub zero weather has kept them away until yesterday. Two days and these cats are done! Sam, Deb and I had it down to 30 minutes per sheet and with 44 left, simple math told us it would take us 22 hours. Sadly, Deb and I both have a couple of jobs and Sam has school and parents with lots of projects. We hate to spend money on stuff we can do ourselves, but man it feels good to not worry about shoveling snow out of there anymore!

Yesterday's progress

Anthony, the heating plan is still up in the air. I have a young guy in my National Guard unit that does commercial HVAC and he says he can "hook us up" with heating and air a very reasonable price but at this point, our build fund is getting depleted quickly. One thing for sure is that it will have a wood stove to knock the chill off.

Looks good!

Sometimes it's best to do what you do and pay someone else to do what they do. At least you went outside to take pictures of them working, I would have shot it through the kitchen window.

Ron Schwarz said it best, "you can't beat a man at his trade" but whatever, it still hurts to shell out cash to someone else. That's less tools and go fast parts for the Farrington family. Also, I did shoot a couple pictures from the kitchen window. Especially when I was convinced the dudes were going to fall off the roof...

Andrew, I bet an office supply store has official adoption forms we can fill out and make it happen. We also have plenty of room for you and the GTO but maybe we can start with a 90 day trial period. ;-)

Nothing wrong with calling in the experts from time to time. When you step back and look at the big picture you and your family stil have a LOT of sweat equity in this project and the little bit that you spent with help on the roof will be a drop in the bucket.

Plus, that's hard AND dangerous work... Just think if something happened to one of you while finishing the roof causing you to get injured, miss work, or worse... I'd call that money well spent.

You do know that of you hadn't started last Fall, this would have been a very mild winter. I appluad you for your effort as I to hate paying for what I know given the time I can do myself. Looks like the hard part is done, unless you plan to sheetrock and I hate sheetrocking.

Tom, your shop is looking good. Look forward to your projects being worked on in it. I will say about the sheetrock, I sheetrocked and painted my shop. And now I kinda wish I had not put sheet rock up. It looks wonderful and gets lots of ooohsss and ahhhhss, but I find myself worrying about the paint job on the walls every time I am wrenching. Grinding and cutting metal, painting, I worry about it. But then I love it when I sit back and look at it.

Just be warned if you put up pretty interior walls what you may put them through. Lol.

Can't wait to see this finished,
Chris

Depends on how much $ you want to spend here really. This is how our floors were done but I have seen it done with much less reinforcement as Tom is doing many times as well.

That looks like a screed. They already poured a structural floor below it, you can see the radiant heat tubing being run on top with a little extra reinforcing to keep it solid.

Lance,
I PM'd you a photobucket link to better show how we tied it all together. We've already bought the white metal ceiling and will be blowing in insulation on top of that. The roof itself will be sprayed with closed cell foam to act as a vapor barrier and deaden sound.

Not much going on with the shop lately. We've been busy getting the cars ready for events. I was able to get the pad formed up in front of the garage door and now just need to wait on the concrete guy. We hauled in pea gravel in the new truck. All the 25-50 leaks are at the screw holes and none at the seams. My take is the crew either put the screws in sideways or didn't seat them enough to properly engage the gasket.

Just like all our build threads we are long overdue for an update! Funny thing, the busier you get working on things the less time it seems you have to take pictures and update stuff. I've gotten lazy and often just do a quick facebook post from my camera phone...

The building inspector came out to do a rough electrical inspection and gave me a short list of things he wanted to see done before final inspection. A step outside the door was one of them so we knocked out a small deck.

We finally gave up on the clowns who did the leaky metal roof. Originally they were going to do the siding too, but after eleven months of trying to get them back to fix the roof leaks we gave up. A friend pointed me in the direction of a place about two hours south that builds complete pole barns but were willing to send a crew up to do the siding because they had a little time between jobs. They agreed to address the roof leaks, but not take responsibility for the roof. Fair enough. Turns out the crew was a handful of Mennonites that were hard working and honest. We really hit it off and since Sam and I were working on the roofing of the canopy the same time they were there they taught us quite a bit. Techniques mostly but the bottom line is, until you have done something for a living you just don't know the tricks of the trade.

Just about every leak in the roof can be attributed to the first crew not sinking the screws. This is just an example, some were much worse than this. The siding guys took care of almost all the leaks, but the ones they missed we'll have sorted out in a week or so.

Sweet setup Tom. Nothing worse than deadbeat contractors. My Dad always told me when I was a kid.... if you do a great job 3 people hear about it. If you do a crap job 10 people hear about it. I'm sure that 10 is closer to 10,000 with the internet.

Yeah Nick, I hope the word gets out locally about the crap work this guy and his sons do. I'm kind of a sore loser whether it's over $5 or $2500 so I don't think he's heard the last from me either. I could go on and on about our phone calls and his comments when I asked for money back because I was paying someone else to fix their mistakes but that sure would be bad form here. Good for some laughs while sitting around the shop bench racing though...

I would burn that guys rep to the ground by any means possible after something like that. As a tradesman I know stuff happens....but you take care of it in a polite and timely manner and the customer is #1 for this exact reason.

On a lighter note....when you're done you will have a shop that I would stab myself in the leg with a giant rusty screwdriver for. Killer setup and in the end it will all be worth it. It looks like its coming together very nice.

Nothing too exciting has been going on with the shop, but my siding guys are getting ready to come out and finish up some trim work so I can finally get the city inspection completed. We are working inside on different projects constantly so here is the only real picture of anything going on.

Man, I wish I could claim the Lemonwood Yellow 66 as our own, but it's really my buddy Andy's car that we've been working on for well over three years. Lots of delays on our end but there has been a ton done since the last update and we're planning to have it done and out of the shop in December.
Here's the link to that transformation:

Tom - it was nice seeing you at DSE again.

Forgot to ask - are you guys going to SEMA?

I know you mentioned you might be going to Scottsdale.

Nice seeing you too. That SS of yours is awesome!

Not making SEMA this year due to Sam's graduation from Army Airborne school and Scottsdale is probably not happening. We had kicked around taking the wagon out for Sam to run, but it just doesn't make sense to spend that kind of money when we should be working on all our other projects. Of course, if someone offers enough cash for us to haul their car out it could easily change our minds... What a sickness we have!

Well Tom, long time no chat. As I now work for the Midas in Plainfield, swing by and say hi. I work Tuesday through Saturday most weeks. Sometimes I take thursdays or Saturdays off but hey driving 84 miles to work each day is so much fun.
So maybe some directions to the fun house one of these days. So who actually built your building, so when I finally get a chance to build I dont use same fellow.
As I see some 4dr projects maybe I can show off MY 4 dr project soon.

Here's the long overdue update on the shop. We've definitely kept plugging away but once the outside was sealed up and it became more usable working on projects took priority.

Back in January we hooked up the wood stove. It worked pretty well, but when the temps were in the single digits and the ceiling wasn't complete it was hard to feel the positive effects of anything from more than 10' away.

Double wall stainless chimney pipe isn't cheap!

The biggest thing that has happened is the finishing of the metal ceiling in the main shop area and the lights. We went with the T5HO six lamp fluorescent fixtures. I found a place on ebay that would sell the American made fixtures for $92 each including freight. Lots of money, but the lighting is amazing so I will say that it was money well spent. I hope it's not necessary next winter, but they function well even below 0*.

The lights in the "machine" area are just porcelain fixtures with 100w incadecent bulbs. Now that we have "real" light in the rest of the shop these will have to go and be replaced with four 4 bulb T5HO fixtures.

Love the ceiling Tom! And I'm way jealous of the lighting as well. I am almost constantly fighting with light when working on things in my shop now, really need to do something better.

You need some insulation on those walls now!

I've got a 40 x 30 shop going up this summer. I'll be incorporating some of these ideas myself. :)

One thing one fellow told me was to put lights on the walls, about 5 feet up. I'll be looking at some of the LED lights when I get to that spot.

John, your in Florida too, take advantage of the sun! I have "skylights" that work incredibly well. I don't care for lights on the walls, they always get hit or broken. I like to "ring" the perimeter of the work areas with lower mounted lights and use taller ones where ever a vehicle will be lifted. BTW, the ceiling fans do a good job of moving some air in the front of the building. Low ceilings are great for heating, but you'll die here in Florida. 20' plus to get the heat up and I use a big exhaust fan in the eve to pull it out.

I'm using the sun! I've got 5 KW of photovoltaic cells going on the roof. :) My plans include 12' ceilings and air conditioning, with insulated concrete block construction. I'm just too old to handle the summer heat here in the Sunshine State.

I do like your low-hanging lights suspended from the ceiling.

I've also got an additional 30 x 40 concrete pad for trailer parking and the like. Anybody know anything about putting an awning over that? Something rated for hurricane-force winds?

Not too much more to report but I did just buy the florescent lights for the paint room and the machine area. The porcelain fixtures we put up just don't provide enough light. We really need to hustle on getting the main area insulated before winter. Lots of work to be done on the shop and cars while the snow flies.
