View Full Version : My custom big brake setup 365/350 rotors, 4pot AP racing calipers

So just lately I've been playing around with a new brake setup. Gone are the single piston 270mm front brakes and rear drums, and in their place are something a bit bigger! Ive used 365mm rotors for the front, and 350 for the rear, with four piston calipers on both. Its a complete setup from an Australian built VE HSV (Holden Special Vehicle) which is a later version of the Pontiac GTO that USA was importing from Australia, and as it has a similar weight distribution I cant imagine having too many issues when it comes to bias etc as I plan on adapting the master cylinder from the donor car also.

Making my job easier has been having the use of a FARO arm, and 3d printer. It makes it super easy for modelling the front stub axle and brake parts, then creating a 3d model using solidworks, and finishing off by printing a replica of the part from ABS plastic for trial fits. Ive still got to finish making the front hub to hold the disc, which will be bolted from the rear of the wheel mounting flange using a support plate behind the disc itself. However, on first trial everything seems to fit up well, and clears everything! (just!) Because the disc is mounted further toward the centre of the car than usual, I only need 12mm of brake clearance with the wheel in the standard position, meaning I can still get plenty of dish. I'm in the process of moving house (to get my car closer to me and my work) so the next bit of progress might be a few weeks away, but its slowly starting to take shape!

From the pictures you can see how I've mounted the bracket to the spindle. Its not ideal as I've had to swap the spindles from left to right, with the brakes mounted behind the axle, but the brake bolt holes are actually forward of the axle. But, it will work, and be plenty strong enough. The latest version of the bracket (third pic) picks up off of one of the steering arm bolts too, to try and give it some extra strength in both axial and lateral directions. The final version will be from 6061 aluminium, , and look a bit fancier than the plastic, at least thats the idea!

I wish I had access to some of those tools. They would come in handy for my custom brackets for cts-v six piston calipers and four piston rears on my velle.

Cool...I think you'll be glad you moved away from the parallelogram design from your first picture with respect to rigidity. While the revised design may not be as light or sexy looking, it will certainly decrease the deflection under load which is generally the most common failure mode for any caliper mount.
