I can't seem to find anybody that does at the "retail" level. Anybody got a source or idea on that?
Another question: anybody ever used Eastwood's Zinc paint? Any comment?

Most any larger city has a local plater that does this type of plating. Look in the phone book. Many times there are more than one plater doing this work. It is usually very cheap in cost however you will have to clean the parts.
I have carried a "5 gallon bucket" of bolts to the plater in the past and had all the bolts done for $50.00. Again, cleanliness of the plated part is key. Blast all the parts/bolts yourself before plating. A plating shop can and will clean/blast the larger parts (and charge accordingly) however this may totally kill their interest in doing any plating work for you. They will not clean the bolts so get out your wire wheel buffer. Platers are like every other American business, they are lazy!

I searched "zinc dichromate Maryland" on Yahoo and came up with 1740 hits.

Oops! Does that sound sarcastic? I was merely suggesting that your search might go better if you look up the full name: zinc dichromate.

I have had zinc plating done at two different shops here in Buffalo in the past. It seams like it is a common pratice. If you can't find any for some reason I could put you in touch with some up here.

You could try Eastwood's tin/zinc plating system (10049 Z $69.99). I have used it many times in the past and was very satisfied with the results. They're even giving 10% off for now.

hmmm. Steevo, good idea, thanks. dichromate, eh? I'll give it a go.
I've talked to 5 local platers and none of them do zinc. Well, not quite true: 2 do zinc, but not for "personal" use. And none of them know of one that does. It's been a little frustrating. I did find somebody that did nickel, so that's underway.
I may try the Eastwood or Caswell kits. They seem to get good results according to various internet sources.
zinc dichromate, zinc dichromate, zinc dichromate (trying to remember that ...)

John,
Are you doing eletroless nickel?

Yes, electroless nickel. Less hydrogen embrittlement that way.
I'm going to bake out the parts when I get them back too. My wife may be annoyed at an oven at 400 degrees for 48 hours ... but oh well.

I haven't used the zinc kit, but I have used Eastwood's cadmium paint kit on my brake booster, and I was really satisfied with the results. It certainly beats paying for a real cad-plated booster, and unless you were looking for it, I doubt anyone would ever know the difference. From 5 feet I honestly doubt you could tell if you tried.
