So I got a flyer from HF like I always do but this time they are discouting tool boxes. The 44" one is on sale for 368.00 and the 56" PRO series is on sale for 799.99, BUT I got a discount code for another 100.00 off it. The box is 56"L x 44"H x 22"D and has 11 drawers. This is the big box, 56" Roller Cabinet - 11 Drawer (http://www.harborfreight.com/56-inch-11-drawer-industrial-roller-cabinet-67681.html). From all the reviews I read it seem like a good box, and for that size at 740.00 out the door (699.99 +tax). I will be picking up one. It is SUPPOSEDLY almost the same quality as the Snap On and Mac boxes at a fraction of the cost. What do you all think? I am 8000 miles away so looking at it before I buy it is out of the question.

The HF boxes are amazing for the price. Thick wall construction and fantastic slides.

I have a 44" box and think it is great. I built it into my workbench.

Generally I prefer not to buy some corporations junk in some cases I make an exception I dont know if this would be one of those cases.
I would rather seek out a used Crafstman or Snap-On or other brand name tool box which may cost twice the price of this but at least I wont be collecting someone elses junk.

I have a craftsman box and a HF box. The HF box is much nicer. They are both made in China now. Some craftsman boxes may be higher quality than my middle of the road box but for the money it is hard to beat the HF boxes.

I have the big box and it's comparable to any of the name brands for far less. I love it! Even better when it's on sale.

I have talked to a few people and soo far this box is legit. The drawers have a locking feature on the one I am looking at, and my buddy has one and he had told me it has the locking drawers. I will keep looking. Sixtyfourbeets, if you dont like "buying peoples junk" then you are in the wrong hobby! I am not going to spend 2-7000 on a TOOLBOX. If I could afford it, it would be different. I spend my money on carparts and tools. My craftsman and hell even the small amount of harbor freight tools turn the bolts in my car just as good as the SNAP ON tools soo many people desperately seek. Dont get me wrong I am a Snap On guy, and I am all about buying american. When you charge as much as these guys charge for a single socket let alone an entire socket set it moves it from my price range. The cost brand new paired with my income force me to look elsewhere! I do have a lot of Snap On stuff, but I only get it when I can find a good deal on it or get it from a truck. I still I think this box is a great idea and I am going to continue to research it and look into buying it.

I've checked out the US generals too they're nice for the price! I got a nice one at Menards, very good quality but was a bottom and a top. Something to consider too!

I have a Matco 6s triple bay that I use for work. I looked at that box when I was looking for a cheap rollaway since it cost less than a service cart off of the tool truck. It is no where near the quality that the big boxes have. The drawers were very flimsy and narrow stance scares me because I have had a cheaper husky box that did fall over on me and ruined all the drawers. I keep all my sockets on the top drawer and it is extremely heavy when full. That being said, for someone that is going to use it for home use it will probably be great. I dont remember if the drawers were a detent or a latch lock though. The detents do wear out over time and the drawers will open on them selves if that happens and cause a problem.

Double check that discount code. I know they don't allow the 20% off coupon, if the item is on sale, but I'm not sure about "discount codes."

I got the discount code directly from the harbor freight sales line. It works, I already checked!

Craftsman boxes are junk, in fact most of craftsman stuff now a days is crap. I have a MAC box and would put the HF up against it every day and twice on Sunday. In fact I've been considering selling my "Made in the USA MAC" box to some one that demands that kind of thing and buy the better HF unit. Great boxes. And yes can't say that about everything from HF, but their tool boxes and their work benches are pretty nice units.

Just purchased the 44" tool chest for $399 and was sceptical until I unwrapped the packaging and got it out. Very well made, solid, good quality hardware, and worth every cent. I highly recommend it.
Bought it to live in the car trailer to keep everything stored where it needs to be. Less plastic bins all over the place.

I own 2 of these, along with the corresponding top boxes. They are outstanding toolboxes. Superior to Craftsman's old stuff, and identical, I think, to their new ones.
If I had the room, I'd buy another box and top pair in a second.

I just bought the red 5 drawer U.S. General roll around cart. With my coupon, I think I paid $154.
Its great. Same build quality as their big carts, so if I can figure out a way to reorganize my garage, I'll purchase one of those.

I am going to buy that cart to. I am gonna keep all my engine assembly tools in it. I wouldn't have so much of an issue with the big companies like Snap On if they would stand behind what they advertise about the "Lifetime Warranty". They don't! I am discussing this with another guy on LS1Tech.com. FYI The Snap On lifetime warranty only covers the original owner of the tool/box/etc. In certain circumstances the individual dealers will warranty the item. I know this first hand because when my box started to rust apart at the seams the Snap On rep told me "the warranty only covers the original owner" then I got the you should trade it in towards this box, I will give you 400.00 towards yours. In which case the conversation ended on a bad note. I know that all the tool companies have gone astray from the "lifetime warranty" and instead of supporting their claims and their product they duck out.

So, how long is the sale going and where can I get the discount coupon?

I keep eyeing these US General boxes but just haven't pulled the trigger yet....while they are on sale may just be the time to pounce.
Yes. I was a Snap-On dealer for a few years, when all of their tools were made in the U.S.A. Obviously, they are not anymore. So why pay Snap-On prices for much the same quality you can buy at Harbor freight for far less?

so does anyone have any issues with the doors staying closed?
SShep71

From what I have read the drawers have no problems staying closed. They supposedly have latches on them. Is anyone near a Harbor Freight that can go check it out? I am a FEW thousand miles from the closest one.
V8 Square: I am going to bail on snap on all together. I used to hear the old guys talk about how awesome Snap On is and how they stand by their products and the warranty, now they do everything they can to skip out of warranty. If I am going to get taiwan support I minght as well just buy Taiwan tools. I know that habor freight will take a tool back when it is broken without hassle, even kobalt tools are doing the same. Maybe it will be time to sell all my Snap On and just buy twice as much Kobalt.

The 44" box is built pretty good. There is no locking mechanism though. The 56" box does have this feature. ALot of my mechs have snap on or matco boxes about the same size. If they were painted the same and both had same lables i wouldnt be able to tell the difference. The 44" box would be nice for the house and honestly its better than my SS craftsman box that i paid $1100 for. If you are looking for a nice box or workbech get two of the 44" boxes and add wood on top of them.
If you are going to take a box to the shop get the bigger 56" box. I feel like it would hold up better.

And not 44" is really the length with the handles, the box itself is like 42" "if 2" matters" right, that's what she or he said, got it!

One thing I've noticed about the HF tool boxes is the "quality" of assembly at the stores. I bought the 5 drawer roll around cart about 2 years ago. To be honest, when I went to the local HF to check it out, I almost walked out based on how "flimsy" it felt in the store. But, with the discount coupon, and for a final price of about $175, I decided to try it anyway. I spent time assembling it carefully, ensuring it was square and aligned before final tightening of the bolts. I must say that it is VERY stout and much better than my first impression from the store model. I understand the store model gets kicked around quite a bit and probably isn't that well assembled in the first place, but 2 years later and the use/abuse it receives, I am still very happy with the cart and like others, would buy another one in a heartbeat if space allowed. I see Mac/Matco/Snap On boxes on CL all the time, and would like one, but would rather get the HF big box and put more money in the car or tools. With proper assembly, I don't see how you could go wrong.

The 13 drawer is actually fully assembled minus the handles. The tool box out/off it's pallet slid into the back of my S6 without issues. One thing also that is kind of nice, is that each drawer has a factory cut drawer liner. So you don't have to go out and pick up and cut yourself the liners, each drawer is already lined (probably could get thicker, more expensive liner I guess). Also what's neat is that it comes with long strips of white "paper" and clear plastic covers (slides into the front of each drawer for ID) so that you can identify each drawers contents or by name or by other, but that's included as well, so you could ID each drawer (As we age, it sometimes takes us a couple of drawers to figure out where we put that darn drive) :)
Nice box, will be putting my MAC USA built tool box up for sale at Garage Journal probably.

I've had the 5 drawer cart for over 2 years, working out of it everyday. I bought it to replace the $1200 Snap-On cart that was stolen. It is just as nice and twice the size of the S/O cart. I will be buying two 44" top & bottom sets, one for all my fab tools and one for the house garage. If I had it to do over I would buy 4 top & bottom sets and not bought my Snap-On box.

Mine is supposed to get delivered tomorrow. I had to pay the extra 100.00 for delivery because there is no way my wife was gonna go get it and I dont have anyone local that could help. I wish I could see the look on her face when the guy drops it off and she has to move it into the garage!

The lower brand boxes are built with lighter gauge sheet metal, see if it has sliders for drawer rails or roller bearings. I think there are a lot of decent boxes for the home do it yourself guys. Check the shipping weight if your comparing boxes. I sold snap on for many years so I will always vote Snap On, It is expensive but there is also value there. I have seen some snap on boxes on ebay for decent prices. For 600 bucks I don't think you could go wrong. Snap on guy will always give you 600 bucks trade in.

Was just at HF today, checked out the toolboxes. Pretty nice. About the same quality as the Homak box I got from Costco last year, which is also nicer than most of the Craftsman boxes I have checked out lately. Seems Craftsman uses thinner metal now, and more Craftsman tools are made in China now. Very disappointing. Have a 25+ year old Matco top box that I inherited from my dad. Seems many new ones cannot even match that one.
