I'm thinking of joining the scca. If any of you reading this are, how is the organization? Tell me some about it

Yes. Lots of different motorsports activities within that organization and many offer a great way to get involved even if you don't actually race. Crewing, working the races as a corner worker, tech, on the wreckers, registration, timing and scoring ... lots of ways to become a part of it all.

Great way to get involved in Solo (autocrossing) too. Most regions put on excellent events and offer a "rookie" program for those new to the sport.

This info is for everybody.

Have been for a little over a year. Great organization with a long history in motorsports. From what I've seen they concentrate on safety while at the same time try to make their events newbie friendly and competitive. We have a very active Region here in KC, over 500 members last I heard. I've been involved with both the Club Racing side and the Solo side, all very well run.

SCCA has been a staple in the racing community for over 50 years, in fact our Protouring style builds we do on our cars come directly from our SCCA and Trans Am roots back in the 60s and 70s. Even though now SCCA has returned back to a grassroots style of race organization in the 60s and 70s they were the predominant race groups just Google Trans Am racing or even history of SCCA, if you're lucky enough to have an SCCA local to you I would join them start their novice beginners program and enjoy the racing

Yes I am. As there are events all over the country and most weekends, it really the easiest way to hop on the autocross merry go round. NASA does the best job of providing low buck track day instruction. If you're new to performance driving (or just suck at it), I guarantee you'll have more fun WITH an instructor than on your own.

Im sure every area is different, but the SCCA people around my area are so anal and nerdy I couldn't bring myself to join. I participate in some of their events but I wont join because I don't want to be considered one of them. Im convinced most of them hate muscle cars too. If a muscle car, or any car with power, gets a little sideways or wheel spin they get all butt hurt about it.

I run SCCA as much as I can (about every other month). Everyone in my region loves the muscle cars. They even put a picture of my car and story in "The Wheel." It is a great way to practice for GG events and get more wheel time in. At the last event, I spun and ended up backwards on my first run, but I was still on coarse, didn't hit any cones, and kept the motor running. I stuck it back in first, dropped the clutch and did a nice 180 with lots of tire smoke. Everyone was cheering and having fun.

The KC Region SCCA just voted in a Muscle Car class for us to run in, based on the Good Guys rule set. A couple of the members fit the string back glove, import driving snob reputation, but the majority of them overrode the few and the SAC unanimously voted for the new classes. They have embraced and supported me in my car since the first time I came out.

I re-joined the SCCA last October after 25 years off (I used to be a member in college). You can't beat the track time, and for the most part, the people are great. It does help having other muscle-car guys there to hang with, so hopefully you can find some guys with the same car-interests. Oh and there is nothing better than beating an uppity Scion/Subaru or Miata owner (there are a few) at their own track, with a 3600 lb car...

Yes, I'm a member. SCCA is a great organization but remember, it is a club run by volunteers for the most part. Sometimes some Regions can be "clickish" just like any club can get but most Regions and their members are the best! I can say that SCCA national office is considering offering classes just for PT / muscle cars. Already several Regions have begun offering muscle car classes on their own. Our Region has been offering a class this year and it's been well subscribed and the competition has been tough! Lot's of fun.

Lance, glad to see you got your proposal approved, good on ya'!

Man I must be in the worst SCCA region! If I did a 180 with lots of tire smoke at an SCCA autocross around here they would crucify me!

Now that the car is done I'm planning on running it at the local Ft Wayne chapter SCCA in mid September. Will probably look into a membership.

Well track time is really not that available during an AutoX event. If you end up working a very large group, you could be standing out there, working a corner, a gate or other for 3 hours and your runs/group maybe a whopping 3 minutes of "course/driving time".. So there are plus and minuses. I know in this area the big muscle car/american car group broke out as they wanted big wide courses, vs small import friendly tight courses, and that is the AAS group (American Auto Sport).

I'm a 10 year SCCA member, here in the Atlanta Region. We get a few Pro-Touring cars that come out and run every so often, everyone loves to see them.
