View Full Version : 69 Chevelle springs

I have been following this thread and took advice from one of the guys on here about going to Southwest Speed to get springs. After a bunch of research, I have decided on 450#'s for the front and 200#'s for the rear. The concerns I have about the springs available from Southwest Speed is, the front springs are 5' x 9.5 x 450#. Will the front springs be tall enough? I know the stock front springs are 16' free height and 11' load height. Is the 9.5' height listed by SS the load height?

The rears are 5.5 x 11' but they have a pigtail on only one end. Will they work on the back of my car?

Related specs on my car:

Small block chevy with vintage air
Tubular upper and lower control arms up front, stock (for now) out back.
Stock disc brake spindles.

The car apparently has big block springs up fron now because it sits like a donk! I have 18's on it and there is a good 4 inches between the top of the tire and the wheel well edge. Definatly not the look I want.

I dont know about the rears without a pig tail on both ends. There is a boss that captures the spring on both ends - without that pigtail (Which would have to go up - def wouldnt work on the axle) I would suspect the spring to make some noise as it moves back and forth.

I had 3" drop spring in the back with a 1" spacer. Theyre 250# and I hated them. Unloaded the car bounces like a heavy leaf sprung pick up. Ive since put a couple other brands until I finally settled on BMR progressive rates.

Just looking at those springs from Southwest........I might suggest not buying those. Id be weary of material and manufacturing process of springs that cost $34 each. However, Ive never used them.

The 9.5" tall fronts won't be tall enough, you will need a spring spacer, either the adjustable one or non- adjustable will work. Some examples here: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Shop/Oval-Track-Coil-Spring-Spacers/15.html

The rears should be fine, I ran the same type on my 67 El Camino. One warning, when you jack up the car and let the rear axle droop down, the spring will fall out. I used a bolt and some washers on the axle perch to keep the springs attached to the axle. Never had any issues with them after that.

You could make some 2" rear and I would buy them.............just sayin.

Like Randy said get the spring shims. I went with the adjustable ones. Also you may want to see what rates some of the other people with this set up are running. Also looks to me like the rear springs may be too heavy compared to the front.

Excellent! Do you have any pics of the car since you put our springs on the rear?
