timing problemos

I’m having some problems getting my timing set on my 388 stoker Chevy small block. I'm running an MSD ignition (6al with an MSD coil and an accel distributor) I disconnected the "brain" inside the accel distributor and am only running the magnetic pick-up. My problem is my timing mark is jumping all over the place and the engine is running like crap! I know allot of things could be wrong here but what should I look for? I also am using an edlebrock crab. Please help I need to get this car done on a limited time budget I only have till the end of September!

The engine also shakes like hell at any thing below 1000-900 rpm and when im cranking it to start it is having trouble due to what seems like too much compression even thought that should be an issue because I have an aftermarket starter motor
