View Full Version : structural reinforcement for 70 Torino front suspension project

I am installing an R&C Motorsports RC-107 kit in my 70 Torino GT. Cutting out the shock towers seems to remove an important piece of reinforcement from the front subframe.
On the below pic I highlighted an area that I am thinking of welding in some 1" strips of 3/16" steel to tie everything together. Not shown are 14g tower replacement panels that will be welded in also.
I have also tacked in some additional bracing shown in the 2nd photo. The car also has subframe connectors already installed.
Any comments/suggestions?

I would think R&C has some suggestion on how to restore/improve the integrity of the area after the changes. Have you pinged them about it?
Aside from that, stich welding seams in the area from the radiator support to the A pillars is a good way to strengthen things up. Project SN95 showed some significant improvements with stich welding. Search them out on here for other suggestions. Perhaps some triangulated braces from around mid point of the inner fender back to the cowl would help.

How do you plan on ensuring the coilover mounts don't slide up in the slots?

Put tubes from the firewall down to the frame.

Update. I decided to 'frame' in the opening with 1/8" x 1.5 steel. This sandwiches the 20g sheetmetal inner fender between the 14g sheetmetal shock tower replacement panels, which should add some overall rigidity without taking up space under the hood. Forgive me for the crappy welds:eek:; I'm having someone who does it for a living complete it for me. I've only welded the outside of the fenderwells, he is going to do the perimeter of tower replacement panels and the crossmember portions.
I contacted R&C Motorsports about the coilover mounts; he said once they are tighted down, he has never had a report of them sliding up in the slots.

Put tubes from the firewall down to the frame.
do this. The stock torque boxes are hidden in the firewall/footwell area. Tie the frame into those.

I have had the mounts slide and bend on the R&C stuff.if you can fab up a better mount for the coil over you will be better off down the road.
