Depends on what $1000 sets your talking about. Vintage wheel works, ET-III and such are good quality but closer to $1600 a set. They will be a little heavier than a more expensive 2 and 3 piece wheels. You can get yourself into a set of 18" 3 pieces Boze's for around $3500 retail (so probably a bit cheaper than that). 2 piece wheels would average mid $2000's. With the more expensive wheels your paying for more machine work as well.
A full set of wheels for $1000 is going to be overseas made, and hence quality and strength will match the price. For no more than a street car they'd be fine but if you plan on running at track events I'd pay the extra for the better wheels.

For the money, I really like the Centerline Lazer. They are about $250 per wheel, but I don't know much about Centerline. Seems like quite a few guys on here are running inexpensive wheels on the road course and autocross with good results. Also, most factory car wheels are now made overseas (JW).

I have a set of Forgeline wheels on my camaro and they are great quality and I think they are worth 1000+ per wheel and I also have a set of Vintage wheel work wheel and love them the same but for Different reasons. They do not have the quality and finish level but you get a entire set for about 1800. But they both do the same thing and I have a piece of mind knowing I have qualty wheels on the track and street.
