Guys,
I am installing a classic update harness from AAW in my 67 camaro. The electric fuel pump wire is a large gauge blue wire. My instructions say fuel pump relay optional. I would have thought that if a relay was to be used, a small ga wire would have been used. I am running an in-tank walbro pump for my LS engine. Do I need a relay for the pump? If so, where to put it?
Thanks,
Shannon

I used a relay on my 1969 aaw harness. But my battery is in the trunk.

Yes you need a relay. I have installed 4-5 AAW harnesses. I dont use the blue wire because I have always sent out the factory engine harness to get modded. They send it back with the relay already wired in. I mount it on the firewall in a somewhat out of sight area, but yet still accessible. If your engine harness does not have a fuel pump relay circuit, you can use the blue wire from the AAW and mount it in a convenient spot to your liking. Scott

Hey Shannon,
Just because a relay is in the mix doesn't mean you can skimp on wire gauge. The power still has to do that long haul back to the pump from the front mounted relay. You should have at least a 14ga. wire in the kit. IF the relay is mounted in back you can go 16ga because the wire is shorter. I still use 14ga for ALL of the pump wiring, power and ground. it is really cheap insurance against hot wires. Also make sure the circuit is fused correctly.

Thanks guys. My PSI harness does have the fuel pump relay. I now need to take my AAW blue fuel pump wire to the fuel pump relay on the PSI Harness. Now from the relay to the pump (Firewall to tank), I need to run 14 ga wire?

I have 14 ga and 10 ga wire on a spool that I can use or I can buy other. Curious what gauge wire you have run to your pump?

If you are running the power lead from the front 14ga will be good. I am running 16ga because the pump is only 2' from the fuse panel/relay center in the back of the van.:)

On a 67 camaro, the wiring for the rear of the car runs in a channel inside the car at the bottom of the drivers door. Since this wire is larger than the others and will always be hot while the car is running, should I put some sort of loom around this wire or will it be fine in the channel?

The original harness should have been wrapped in harness tape. I would recommend running the whole harness in some type of loom if there is room. If not, protecting the fuel pump wire is a good thing. I haven't decided on loom for the van yet. I am looking at the tech wrap that Waytek carries. Looks nice but it is kinda spendy...
