The names are partially cutoff for me too, looks like the table formatting needs to be modified or something. As soon as I get front wheels I will submit my specs.

How do I get my car on that database?

And... it might be a good idea to have a column saying "minitubbed or modified tub" yes or no.

That way people don't just assume a large wheel and tire package will fit a car.

Just a thought,

On Vince Ortiz 70 Camaro, how did he fit the 335? Mini - tubbed?
Yes, that car is minitubbed.... sort of.... Well, it will be when he has time to finish it. The wheels have been mocked in place, but no work has been finished yet. He's apparently still deciding on what to put out back in terms of suspension. And that's besides the rest of the jobs he's working on. Look for MrQuick, and check his profile. I believe there's a link to his web page on there. He's got pics up.

I appreciate all the hard work that has gone and will go into the database; however, virtually all of the backspacing specifications are followed by "?." IMHO, that makes the database of very little use, as 0.25" can make the difference between a wheel and tire being fine and not working well. Can we ask people to be more precise, or give instructions on how to measure?

Hey guys,

This is a static database that was built in MS word. Meaning, it can't be updated. However, you can add your information to this thread as some of you have done, this way others can still view it. There are plans to make a new database, but with so many other things that take priority, it is a ways off. The new car gallery will be searchable, so it will basically take the place of the database.

1969 Camaro SS 350
10 bolt positraction rear/SSBC disc brakes front & back
Monoleaf springs/Monroe air socks
15x8 Torque Thrust II's with 4 1/2 backs space
255/60 R15 BFG's on rear
Tires are centered with no rub. Air shocks no longer necessary.
TT II's with 4 3/4 would also work.

new member here looking for some help with tire sizes for my 68 camaro?

ertoys
12-21-2005, 09:38 AM
What do you want to know?

Are you mini tubbed?

What suspension upgrades are you running-dropped spindles etc.?

Race or street?

The folks here will help you any chance they get, but you have to provide more info for them to be able to help you achieve your goals.

I hope this helps,
Ed

sorry about that. my 68 has stock spindles global west control arms and springs, and QA1 shocks. It is not tubbed and it will be for street. I have a chance to get some new rims 17x7's in the front with a 4 inch backspace the rear's are 18x8 with 4 1/2 of backspacing.

You may want to add a place in the database for a link to a photo. That way members can view members vehicles and setups. How do we add our cars setup to the list?

Ralph LoGrasso
02-06-2006, 01:55 PM
Red,

The database is extremely outdated. Our new car gallery will have provisions for a wheel fitment search, etc (everyone will also be able to add their own cars). This was just something we did a long time ago as a quick and temporary fix.

I just put 275/40-17's (Nitto 555rII) on all four corners of my 69 Firebird. The wheels are Billet Specialties Street Stars, 17"x9.5" w/ 5.5" back space (280 each from a local Discount Tire). I have stock subframe, with SPC (from scandc.com) adjustable upper control arms, DSE lower control arms, and stock (8.2 BOP) rearend. The backspacing is perfect for the front, but the rear could have been 5.75" (there's about 0.5" clearance between the tires and upper rolled outer fender wells and about 1" clearance between the tires and inner fender well). I wanted to be able to rotate the tires so I ordered the same backspacing for all 4 wheels.

1968 Firebird

Rear
11”x17” rims with 6.5” offset 335 35 17 tires
notched rear sub frame, rolled fenders
3.5” of drop with leafs and roll slider shackles
custom full floating ford 9”

Front
9.5”x17” rims with 4.5” offset 285 35 17 tires
custom weld in Art Morrison C-5 front sub frame
rolled fender lips.

You might also want to add a note to the list that explains the imperfections in GM's manufacturing process. Dimensions can very more then 1/2” from one car to the next. I only assume this is also the case with other automobile manufactures of the late 60's.

It's pretty simple, and no registration is required.
just thought it might help. I was googling for wheel fitments and found this thread.

LWillmann

No, it doesn't look like that. What I built integrates into the vB interface.

The setup I've done is still young in it's lifespan, and I've still got features to add (like photos), but it was built to be very similar to the one that is here already, only better, allowing for the users to handle their own vehicle data, as well as more vehicle data (frame mods, body mods, etc.)

Here are a couple of screen shots:

First, is the list of vehicles in the fitment database.

You can filter by vehicle make.
You can sort by various fields.

Next, is what the detailed view of a particular vehicle entry looks like, where you can see the full entry. You can see full suspension information, frame modifications, body modifications, etc if the user entered that data.

And finally, you see the data entry form where you will enter or edit a vehicle.

A user is not limited to a single vehicle either, so if you have more than one, that's not a problem with the way I built it.

As for registration being required, on my test site, registration is required to use it. But if they decide to use it here, the registration requirement would be up to the Administration here.

fatfree

Um... well, that looks identical to that other site I mentioned.
Format seems almost the same too.
See here: clicky (http://www.rimtuck.com/results.php?vehiclemake=All&vehiclemodel=All&yearfrom=All&yearto=All&wheelmanf=All&wheelmodf=All&diameterf=All&widthf=All&signf=&offsetf=All&tiremanf=All&tiremodf=All&treadf=All&sidewallf=All&wheelmanr=All&wheelmodr=All&diameterr=All&widthr=All&signr=&offsetr=All&tiremanr=All&tiremodr=All&treadr=All&sidewallr=All)
It even has the detail also on the right, and notes for bodymods for wheel fitment.
I'd say someone is copying someone... JK!~

(EDIT: I just messed around with it, and looked at yours, it's .... identical in almost everyway! filtering by make/model/size/etc.., photos added, people can put more than one setup, and edit it. *shrug*)

Well, yours is good because it's incorporated in the VB, and good to keep everything in one place

Oh well, nm about the other one then... haha

Not wanting mentioning other sites but I built my tyre wheel combo using a sticky on www.n******8.com.
Readers can read the whole sticky , when they see the tryes wheel combo they like along with a photo then they can use the details for their own project. Using a filter makes things a little complex for some of us older non IT blessed induviduals. If anything a Sticky for 1st Gen and 2nd Gen F Bodys, a couple for Novas, Impalas, Mustangs etc. On this site the 1st Gen F-body sticky would be the busiest.

This is my set up, pretty common and boring.

TTII's 8 x17 front 4.5 BS 245/40/17 and 11 x 17 5.75 BS 315/35/17. Front is stock style 2nd Gen suspension. Rear is a 12 bolt Posi from 1970's Formula 400.
I used to get rubbing on rear till I added a rear anti roll bar. Front is lowered with cut Hotchkis springs, rear is stock multi-leafs.

82 Cadillac Eldorado w/ touring suspension and big block 472. 16 X 8 Trans Am wheels with 6.75” backspacing. No rub with 225/60 16. With 235/55 s the inner lip of the rear fender must be rolled or cut, and those are the widest tires for the back with that backspacing. There is room for 1” more backspacing in the rear. 255/50s are the widest up front. Plenty of room under the front fender, but the tire touches the sway bar when the wheel is at full turn to lock due to excessive tire overhang. Needs a ¼” spacer.

I also Test fitted a 17 X 9.5 Corvette wheel with 7.49” backspacing under the front with a 275/40 17 and had no problem. The rear would require a 255MM wide tire and most all of the inner fender lip to be shaved. Sorry for the poor quality picture.

here is an update. If anyone is still updating the wheel database.

1965 ford falcon. 16x7.5 with 4" backspace on all four corners. this is with a 245/50/16 tire. i think a 4.0625 or 4.125 BS in the back would fit a little better. but it just clears everything right now.

suspension: the back is stock leaf springs lowered 2" and the front is my own design double a-arm with coilovers. but no body-mods and this setup allows for a little more BS and width on the front because of the increase in upper ball joint clearance.

If you want the biggest, baddest tire and wheel combination possible, you need to get a Tire MountMate tool from WheelWorks, Inc. The tool allows you to determine the correct offset needed to make the tires fit without rubbing. And you don't even need a wheel to fit the tire. Check out www.wheelworksinc.com and click on Products.

I would have to agree -- this is definitely the best tool I have in my arsenal of tools.

You only get one shot when your doing custom wheels and this will make your life so much easier.

You actually get to see what the tire looks like on the car. Turn the front wheel and check for clearance issues and run the suspension up and down.

Trust me you need one of these when you doing custom wheels.

Just saw this thread and the database for the first time.

Great stuff. If only there was more updates and different sizes in the database

This database is a good start. It would be nice to put pics with each input. What someone says fits may be a function of perception? Plus, there has to be more "A" bodies on here right.... and where are all the Buicks at? Take the time boys, fill in the blanks.

I've got a 69 Camaro without tubs and mostly stock front end. I'm running fronts.... 245-40-18x8 15mm offset and the Rears are 275-35-19x9.5 w/ 15mm offset. There's no rubbing, but it's a close fit. Photo to come.

Update on my 64 impala wheels. I bought 18x8 and 20x9 mb old school wheels. 4.5 backspacing on all wheels fits great. 275/35/20 rear. Waiting to see what tires will work for the front. It seems 245/40/18 will work.

This may be an easy question for some of you to answer I simply cannot. I have a 1970 lemans I would like to go with 18 in the front and 20 in the rear. I had planned on taking my car to the tire shop and having them measure everything however, in all my wisdom I was installing a hotchkis suspension TVS and decided it made sense to do the disk brake conversion at the same time. This is great except the wheels that are on the car will not fit over the disks so Im kind of stuck. The suspension kit was supposed to drop the car roughly 1inch would I just subtract an inch from the height or is that now how it works? Im hoping to be able to simply order the wheels and tires and have them delivered.

Your brake parts supplier might be able to recommend a wheel brand or style that will clear the calipers. For example, Brembo or Wilwood one supplies templates that you can use to check the fitment of a wheel prior to mounting to the car. I used these templates to send to a wheel manufacturer to see if my desired wheel would work with the caliper. Sadly, they would not so I had to look for different brakes, LOL.

I would think that if the back side of the wheel (spokes for example) is fairly flat or doesn't have too agressive a curve toward the center of the barrel, you should be just fine with most 18" and 20" wheels over most brakes, where you might run into problems is your backspacing/offset and wheel width/tire width. There is a device out there called a 'wheelrite' I believe that you mount to the wheel mounting surface, set it to the desired wheel diameter and from there can play with wheel sizes. It appears to also have a wire to simulate tire sidewall and tread patch so you can get a rough idea of how well the wheel is going to fit on the car.

Here is a link to the Wheel Rite - http://www.percyshp.com/WheelRite.html

Good luck with that project!

Very nice car and setup. I have a very similar setup. Mine is excellent right now but I am thinking of doing wilwood 13" as well and am alittle concerned about the .3 push out up front.

I have CCW LM 20's Black anodized centers and polished lip
18x8 up front with a 4.75 BS, GW upper CA's, Ridetech drop spindles and stock otherwise. 245/40/18 Nitto NT-05. GW 600# springs, 5/8 inch spacer (was a tad too low) Hellwig protour sway bars, Bilsteins. 1 degree neg camber helped a great deal to eliminate the rub

18x10.5 rear 6" BS with 1/4 spacer, rolled lip, massaged inside, 3" bump stops, GW CAT 5 springs, 1" block, 12 bolt, 285/40/18 NT-05R.

We are nearing the final stages of finalizing our wheel and tire fitment, so I thought that we would share it with you. The subject car is my 1981 Pontiac Trans Am S.E. We have been toying around with many wheel and tire combos. Still haven't settled on one yet but are very close. The front of the car will retain it's stock front sub frame, with our own uppers and lowers, with Corvette C6Z spindles and brakes. We have Detroit Speed uppers and lowers on in these photos, we are not using them because we needed a wider track width when using Corvette spindles and offsets. In the rear of the car, we will be using a a conventional Detroit speed mini tub set, with a near stock width Ford 9" rear end with a watts link set up, and our own trailing arms and torque tube. The front wheels in the pics are Corvette Z-06 "spider" wheels (18" x 9.5", +40 offset) and the rears are (19" x 12", +59 offset).

Rear Suspension: Factory mono-leafs (for now)

Front Wheels: 17x8.5 5" bs 255/40r17 Falken Azenis

Rear Wheels: 17x8.5 5" bs 275/40r17 Falken Azenis

I would also add to the table a column for stock rearend width or custom width, otherwise we would have to assume all of the sizes are based on stock dimensions. Just a thought.

I can add my car to the Data base now as I finally have them installed and no issues. 1979 Chevy Malibu, pretty much stock front suspension with S10 Blazer spindles, sealed hubs, and brakes added, frame notched in the rear and mini-tubbed, Stock length 8.5 rear axle with disc brakes added. Front wheels are 18x9.5 with 275/35/17 tires, 5.45" backspacing. Rear wheels are 18x10.5 with 295/35/18 tires, 5.95" backspacing. No issues so far with rubs or scrubs other than slight rubbing on the sway bar at full lock.

68 Firebird with complete TCI Engineering chassis (rear torque arm and front subframe), C6Z06 Kore3 front brake kit and hubs, CPP rear big brake kit

Wheels (all 4) are c5Z06 Speedline wheels 18x10.5 with 8.03 backspace (+58mm offset).
Tires (all 4) BFG Rival S 315/30-18

Front, 1.75" spacer/adapters - ~6.3" backspace, -2.5deg camber
Rear, 1" spacer/adapters - ~7" backspace

Rear is minitubbed up to the frame (no frame cutting) and has stock width 10 bolt housing and axle length

In the front I moved the wheel wells inward an inch (by separating the wheel well from the front portion and drilling two new holes for the bolts on the roof of well to fender) and cut the outer part out (the part you cannot see from the engine compartment) and replaced it with sheet metal with a more square cross section, and rolled the lip of the front fender (all the way, cracked the paint a little near the edge--underneath where the chrome trim used to go).

To do this I put the car up on jack stands, took out the front coil overs and experimented by moving the suspension through its shock and steering travel. I put the outer sidewall of the tire as far out as it would go so it just clears the rolled lip under full bump and medium steering angles (and medium bump and full steering angles). Turning radius feels about like stock again, not great but workable--since the wider tire makes up for the inset frame rails (TCI Eng front subframe has inset frame rails from stock).

No rubbing after Optima and Cars and Cones many AutoX's and fully loaded (with passenger) road miles. Only rubbing is at full lock in parking lot. Haven't done a good guys course yet, but it's great for normal AutoX courses and road courses. Will get spacers for steering rack (thanks to Chad-1stgen for the info) to act as a hard stop so rubbing won't occur and I can confidently whip the wheel around a GG course--finger's crossed i can make the turns ;-) (worst case can put 275s back on for GG, and still the mod is a net benefit).
