View Full Version : Matte or gloss stripe...

I've got a 69 Camaro that will be painted platinum graphite. Wheels are matte black centers with polished hoops. I was leaning towards a gloss black stripe because I didn't want the tape edge with the matte stripe. After seeing some dark grey matte stripes I'm leaning towards a dark grey matte stripe with a gloss black small border stripe. Is a matte stripe as easy to maintain as a gloss stripe? Is there a downside to having a matte stripe, besides the tape edge that I'm not a fan of?

Although I can not comment on the matte issue, I am debating the same thing in my build and would love to see some pics of the color you chose.

Any recommendations on a border stripe color and finish on the outer edges of the wide matte stripe? Or should I not use a border stripe? I feel like not using a border stripe doesn't look as good. I like the idea of a black border because my wheel centers are black. If I do a color other than black than I have too many colors going on (car color, stripe color, border color and wheel color). Also, if I do a matte border than I have multiple matte stripes with multiple tape edges. Anybody have any input on the ease (or lack of) of maintaining matte stripes?

My 69 is painted silver with matte stripes to match my wheels.
I debated adding a boarder as well. Ultimately I skipped the boarder and haven't looked back. I like the stripe. When I clean the car I only wash the matte, for obvious reasons don't wax, buff, polish, etc the mate. No issues with prints or any other things.

Do you want to see pics of the color of the car or the color of the stripe. The color of the car is platinum graphite off of the Nissan 370z. I'm not sure if I want to darken this color and matte it for a stripe or use a matte black to match the wheel centers. I don't want to get too many colors going. I will probably go with a matte stripe, I just need to decide which color.

Thanks for the info. I will probably go with a matte stripe, just not sure which color. Matte black seems to make the most sense because the wheels are BS Splines with matte black centers, but I've seen a dark grey that looks pretty cool. What color are your stripes?

Picture of the car.. I think I have looked at that color a few times on a 370, very nice color. Will look really good with either strip im sure. I am doing a very similar color. Don't want to hijack your thread, but if you want to check it out here is the link.
Im painting it Ferrari Grigio Silverstone

That is going to be a beautiful car. I love that Ferrari color and almost picked it but when I went to a Ferrari dealership to check it out in person I felt like it was a little darker than what I wanted. I will get a couple pics of my car posted. So far only the door jams and rockers are painted. Just finished installing my new LS3 and transmission and now running trans, brake, fuel and a/c lines. The painting will be completed hopefully soon, after all of the lines have been run and the vintage air and custom dash have been installed.

Nice, looking forward to seeing it. I have a build thread going under projects, check it out when you have time. You have one going?

This shows the color, stripe and wheel. I was test fitting the rear 19" wheel for back spacing. That's why the wheel looks too big

Great looking color combo. I can't wait until mine is painted.

Here are a few pics of the color. Unfortunately only the jams are painted so far. Using Ridetech's gas cap since it matches my wheels. Sorry for the pic quality, they were taken with my iphone. Also, sorry the pics are so big, not sure how to make them smaller.

Thank you. Picking out the color has been the hardest part of the build so far, I spent months staring at every silver/grey car I saw. I went to Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Maserati and even Ferrari dealerships looking for a color. I told my builder to hurry up and finish painting my car before I change my mind again.

I have a matte center stripe on my Falcon build and it's pretty low maintenance. If I wash/ dry it I just make sure the towels are clean and I dont let the water dry up on the matte and I'm good.
I say matte since that's what your wheels are. Ties the car together better, imo, with a consistent 60%, 30%, 10% rule. Graphite, Matte Blacks, Chrome (respectively to the ratios)
Either way, you'll have a sweet look.

I agree picking the color was also the hardest part of my build as well , I stressed out over it for about 2 months while i was building my camaro and all along it was right in front of me lol i have a picture of a camaro as my background on my desktop and one day I just looked at it and realized thats the color right there so thats was the color I painted it and i have no regrets as it looks great and I get comments everywhere i go ... it is a custom blend I made myself a shade of blue that looks great but now do i really want to add the silver rally stripes not sure about that yet , I may have a set done in vinyl just to see if that is where i want to go with that ....good luck with your decision!

Do you have any pics of your car that you can post? I'm also considering laying out some different colored vinyl stripes to see what color I want to use and then paint the stripe the color I choose.

the final dissision is yours but have a look at some of the pontiac montana mini vans.not for colour but the bottom is a matte finish this is accomplished by using a flattening agent in the clear.ive seen flat black spray bomb specials that look like crap with greasy hand prints on them.use a flattening agent in the clear and the paint can be washed as normal without rapid sun fade.of course colour sanding is best.if funds allow it.and the stripe tape lines will become invisable.

Agree 100% that a matte black stripe with gloss boarder would look odd. I like a boarder stripe but I'd keep it the same colour or it might clash.

I vote for a Matte Stripe (bumpers and wheels), added a little metallic to mine. It's a bit more maintenance, but I love the look....
The Tape line is minimum, and is hardly noticed. There is a company "Swisswax" that makes cleaning products and wax for the Matte finish, and they work great. The Matte does spot easily, so I wipe it off after every ride
