View Full Version : pulled the trigger on a trackside garage!

Here's my scenario:
A job change gave me the opportunity to move back to new orleans, la. New orleans is a special snowflake of a housing market, in which if you want a garage ( like im used to in nashville), you better be prepared to pony up close to a million for your house if youd like to live in new orleans proper.

The other issue that you face is the potential of another katrina type event, which every car insurance company will remind you of.

In comes a newer track that is 25 mins away from new orleans. Its a place called nola motorsports park. 2 road courses, 2 different carting tracks ( kids and adults), autocross pad, restaurant onsite, 24 hr security, 24 hr access and a slew of other features including an onsite speedshop with dyno!

I ended up leasing one of thier 500sf units with electric , compressed air, 20 ft door, the works.

They do tons of events too for bikes, cars, carts, scca, nasa, etc.

If any of y'all come down this way, let me know. If you want to get out on the track, need a spot to turn a wrench, want to do an event or whatever, drop me a line. I can also offer a place to stash your trailer that is safe if any of y'all roll through and want or need to drop it somewhere to explore new orleans a bit more easily. Same goes for wanting to park an rv with water and power.

Im super excited to be able to actual keep going with my project instead of putting the car into storage for a year or more.

There are about 60 garages full of likeminded individuals on premise. Im hoping maybe once I get settled that I can do an event there. The management there seemed super exited when I tossed the idea out to them.

Anywho... sorry for the rah rah. I had fully expected that I wouldnt be able to touch my car for quite a while, so im pretty psyched that I found an alternative that was doable.

Wow, congrats! I have only heard great things about that track. A dream of mine is to own a trackside garage with a fully appointed man cave above. Have fun.

This sounds good--maybe I can redirect my wife away from the historical significance of the area for a bit next time we're down there. A racing event is always a good reason, even if it's just to watch others doing an open track day. I'll have to put my drink down first, however...

I agree with James. A great young facility that is going nowhere but up. Congats!

I'm still scratching my head at the point that it costs a million bucks to live below sea level.

What does it cost to lease something like that?

Arg. New orleans is not below sea level. Common misconception and quite the old wives tail. How much does it cost to buy a late 1800s 3000 sq ft house where you live? Anything smaller here is a shotgun that spans the entire property.

That is unless you want to live outside of orleans parish, then the prices go down sharply. Wife insists on being in orleans parish and not every neighborhood is one that id like my wife to be walking around.

It really depends on what size you need. Prices start at 1.40 per sq ft per month. As far as I know there are no vacancies right now. They are contemplating building another row of 12 though.

It is expensive to live in a decent neighborhood in Chicago as well, but it is not a million bucks. Plus if I didn't have to live here I wouldn't. Unfortunately I have to because of my job. I have a restriction on my employment that requires me to live here.

Dave,
That garage situation sounds like a winner!

In the defense of nola, im used to an oversized 2 car (750 sq ft), air conditioned amd heated, with another covered "bay" next to it. That big of a garage in nola comes with a huge house attached and is mega bucks. Theres more to a city than the size of your garage, and im good with the tradeoff. Plus this way my garage comes with a racetrack!

Thanks steve! If you find yourself down here, let me know. All I need to do now is scam a ride in my neigjbors car ( all original 68 super snake!)

You have the tools now fight!

Welcome to the area, we frequent the track quite often and have access to one of the garages there also. Maybe we will see you there one day at one of the events.

Be sure to post up some pics when you get moved into the garage. I would be interested to see what kind of space you have.

I'm not knocking it believe me if I could move near a racetrack with a garage I would be there tomorrow. I wish we had that in Chicago, instead we have high taxes and higher crime in the less desirable places of the city. Good luck with your new endeavour.
