      steering wheel woes

Removed the steering wheel on my 78 Malibu today to replace the blinker lever and upon reinstalling everything I couldn't depress the shaft spring enough while trying to reinstall the lock ring on the shaft. Got pissed off and got it as far as I could and put the wheel back on and finished up. Now it feels really tight turning right at first then it pulls real hard and deeper. Any ideas? Need to know because this us my daily driver. Thanks y'all.

you missed getting the lock plate down on splines. The compressor is cheap at most parts stores, Think I paid $15 for mine. But I am tech so buying was better than renting but if you take it back, usually get rental back.
I have done them with just vise grips, screw driver and sharp pick. Namely cause I thought I left car keys at work, after ot it started with no lock cyl I found keys.
