Roll bar/cage for road racing events

I'm looking at having a roll bar/cage installed in my '87 Cutlass later on down the road and have read where everyone recommends getting the rule book for whatever class or type of racing your going to be participating in and building to their specs.

Where do I look for these rules and information?

I don't really plan to race the car in any kind of competitions, just mostly open track days and driving school type stuff. Considering all of the upgrades I've done to the engine, trans, suspension, etc. I don't want to put myself let alone an instructor at risk in a car with stock belts and no roll bar.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

      Andrew,

Here are some quick rules all from memory so double check them. These are the most conservative rules comparing NASA, SCCA and NHRA.

Main hoop is one piece and can only have 4 bends.
The hoop supports that go to the trunk cannot be bent.
The hoop needs a diagonal and a harness bar. The diagonal needs to be one piece.
The hoop needs to be over 2" above the helmet and within 6" behind the helmet.
depending on weight 1.75" with .120" wall thickness DOM tubing will be sufficient.
6"x6" plates that are 3/16 thick welded to the floor or bolted with back up plates and four 3/8" bolts.

      Thanks for the info guys.

As far as the rear bars that go into the trunk, that would be a deal breaker for me. :( I want them bent so that I can keep them hidden as much as possible. Not concerned about keeping the back seat functional but don't want bars going through it either.
      Hmmmm....

      Andrew,

SCCA and NASA do not allow bends in the rear bars. NHRA does allow one 30* bend.

Found a rule book for the SCCA and see the section your talking about.

Below the section where they talk about the maximum number of bends each tube is allowed to have they also have a paragraph that states that

"...If any of the above bend requirements cannot be met, all components of the roll cage shall be fabricated from the tubing size(s) listed for the next heavier category of automobiles."

So I'm reading that as if my car requires a roll bar material size of 1.75" x .120" then to put bends in the rear tubes I would need to go up to 2" OD x .120" wall tubing for everything.

Is that how you would read that?

      Andrew

Seen some G-body guys run the rear tubes paralell to the headliner then outside the rear speakers near the B Pillar, keeping the rear speakers, and then ran between the rear trunk torsion bar mounts and the quater panels down to the frame, basicly 1 bend.

Try to find those pics then Ill post them
