One Lap of America - Day 1 0700H

South Bend, IN We're saying goodbye to the exotic Super 8 South Bend for the week and heading first to Tire Rack for the wet skip pad before putting the OneLapCamaro on South Bend Speedway's 1/2 mile (thankfully pad) oval track - definitely a first for the OLC. Once we're done at the Speedway it's a short 100 mile transit to the Autobahn Country Club where we'll determine our qualifying position for the week. Once we're finished up at Autobahn it's 450 miles to Council Bluffs, IA... It's going to bra long day! Weather looks questionable... Weatherman says cloudy all day with between a 25 and 50 percent chance of rain... I guess it stands to reason that if it's going to be cloudy it might rain but just saying that it could rain... at any time... isn't a news flash... Anyways... Off to Tire Rack for the wet skid pad... As Brock said yesterday... "Most people haven't done a wet skid pad and those who have don't know how to do it right." That would be us...

When we I went to driving school, we had an ICE skid pad! And the instructor had control of the gas pedal. Have fun!

Carl/James.. Im happy to open the doors at my shop if needed. Plymouth is closer to my shop than South Bend, but both are doable. I have lifts, welders, plasma cutter and much more. There is also 920sq ft of finished living quarters in my shop. Carpeted bedroom and bathroom with shower etc if anyone needs to gets some sleep. I also have trucks and trailers if the car needs trailered to the shop. Good luck!!

      More pictures from Carl's Blackberry

Viper on the wet skidpad, though it's starting to rain so it will make the day interesting once we get to the oval track.

      Day 1 - Joliet, IL - 2 PM

      So far so good!

Two stops done today and we're at the Autobahn Country Club outside of Joilet, IL where we are waiting to make a qualifying run that will determine our starting spot for the rest of the week.

The wet skid pad went really well - we were able to pull an 0.804 (good for 25th overall)... awesome to see a first gen Camaro outperforming 'Vettes, Porsches, and even all wheel drive GTRs!

The oval was a different kettle of fish... I've never run on a oval and was probably (definitely) too tentative. We wound up mid-pack in 48th place. But it was a tight pack - the difference between 2nd and 48th was just over a second lap!

So now after a 100+ mile transit it's a bit of hurry up and wait but it gives everybody a chance to catch their breath.

In the mean time I've got my on track copilot strapped in and ready to go...

That would be a gruesome sight once that splitter has it's way with any wayward raccoon.

      Day 2 - somewhere in Iowa - 12:41 AM

      Wet cleanup in isle 3....

We got sloppy seconds on a fresh deer that an 18 wheeler took a shot at... A couple of big chunks bounced under the car and we're pretty sure there's going to some hair...

No apparent damage done but we'll have the pleasure of looking in to it soon...

Good luck the rest of the way thru our lovely state!

      Day 2 - Council Bluffs, IA - 6:00 AM

The thunder and lightning started around 5 and was quickly followed by the rain and the hail - none of which are the way you want to start your day.

A quick drive to Mid America and day 2 will really get rolling!
