Calling all 1st and 2nd Camaro LS swap owners!

So we have a thread for known combinations that work.

I'd like to start a thread about combinations of LS motors in first and second gen Camaros that didn't work so well and how you solved it.

So, I suppose to be most helpful we should have the basics:

      Car:
      Motor:
      Transmission:
      Transmission Crossmember:
      Fuel Tank:
      Headers: (brand, size and finish)
      Motor Mounts:
      Oil Pan:
      Stock/Modified/Replaced Subframe:
      Exhaust used:
      Radiator Used:
      Wiring Harness:
      What issues came up?
      How did you solve them?
What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers?

I truly would appreciate any of your guys' help with this list as it will certainly help future guys out there!

      Any questions I missed?

      ~Eric

PS - Hey mods, can we sticky this?

I live overseas, so far away (OK with the Internet the world got a lot smaller) from all the convenient resources you guys & gals have nearby. Nevertheless I swapped a LS3/4L80e and a year later a T-56 in place of the 4L80e. I did this a couple of years ago. Back then there was far less materials for sale then there's now. However, I did my homework and it basically went pretty smooth.

So best advice I can give you: DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!!

Best place with lots of info: LS1tech.com. I would specially recommend the stickies to quickly get up to speed .

      Car: 1968 Camaro
      Motor: LS1 F-Body with F-Body stock accessories
      Transmission: F-Body T56 6 speed
Headers: Dynatech ceramic coated headers (1-7/8" w/ 3") (Excellent Clearance around the stock power steering set-up)
Motor Mounts: Carshop motor mounts stock location. (Alternator barely clears with F-body accessories)
Oil Pan: Stock F-Body modified (Extended pick-tube, no windage tray) (Note: oil pan notching not required if running the car shop plates with a f-body oil pan, It would have cleared)
Subframe: stock subframe with tubular control arms, coil spring, sway bar upgrades (stock body bushings and stock power steering
Exhaust used: magnaflow ss exhaust kit
Transmission Crossmember: S&P crossmember - new style
Radiator Used: 2002 Camaro Radiator and Fans (Homemade Brackets)
Wiring Harness: Chevy Thunder (very well marked, nice budget harness) This harness is a good quality harness.
Fuel Tank: spectra premium EFI tank. reflared Gm press on style flares for sending unit. (non-tubbed cars only)
Fuel Lines: Dorman nylon 3/8 & 5/16 fuel line and connectors, 99+C5 filter/regulator
Gauges: Dakota Digital VHX. Love the gauges, instructions come with LSx conversions
Power Steering Lines: metric conversion fitting with 90 degree 3/8 tube flared. 11/16 supply and 5/8 return. Napa auto parts fixed me up with these.
      What issues came up?
-Firewall and Trans Tunnel Clearance - Cut and Modified to clear. A stock firewall should be fine, mine was modified.
-Motor mounts needed to be ground slightly to clear long tube headers on DS
-T56 firewall bracket-holes had to be filed to line up
-Engine sets very close to firewall but will be fine
-Clutch pedal bracket dimensions from street and performance did not work-I had to modify bracket to work with my set-up.

What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers?
      -Figure out your budget!!
-First thing first is figuring out what type of LSx motor you want, whether your using an after market frame or a stock 67-69 frame. Power steering, manual, or rack and pinion? headers? Gauges? fuel injected or carbureted? what kind of HP/TQ? auto or manual? stock accessories or aftermarket?
Oil pan, power steering lines, mounts, exhaust manifolds, fuel injection/motor harness, transmission x-member, exhaust, fuel tank, fuel regulator/filter, radiator with electric fans, flexible fuel line, radiator hoses, ac braket if running air conditioning.
-I would have went with the complete BRP kit if I was to do this again. BRP sets the motor forward more and a little higher, but works quite well.
-Figure out what type of steering set-up your going to use ahead of time.
-Dynatech headers will not work with the BRP Kit! Hedman 3/4 length do work and look great! Tried Dynatechs already on a friends car.
-I would have purchased the spectra tank if I was going to do it all over again. The caprice tank swap is a cheap alternative though.
-Kwik Performance Bracket works as well as it looks. If your going the AC route with stock accessories I recommend this bracket. Well worth the money. (You can always modify your frame when using f-body accessories)

Any questions I missed?Added crossmember, fuel tank, body bushings

      Car:73 Firebird
      Motor:02 LS1
      Transmission:T-56
Headers: BRP Heddmen 1 3/4 step to 1 7/8 coated
      Motor Mounts: BRP
      Trans cross member: BRP
      Oil Pan: Stock
Stock/Modified/Replaced Subframe: Subframe is stock, trans crossmember had to drill new holes for otherwise no mods
Exhaust used: (not inthe car yet) 3in pipes from headers to 2 chamber flowmasters dumped before rear axle
      Radiator Used:4th gen with fans
Wiring Harness: daytonayellaz (here on the board) custom made for me
      Fuel Tank: Spectre fuel tank
What issues came up? My son and I test fitted the motor and trans using BRP's instructions, fit perfect as they said it would. Drilling the crossmember holes for the trans has been the only real hassle with no lift.
How did you solve them? So far I feel that I've solved most of the problems before running into them due to research across all the forums. I went with a kit knowing that the kit works, yeah it was more money but worth it to me.
What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers?I've been planning this project for years so the research has been a lifesaver for sure. I made a book 3in thick of different forum posts and articles for each step of this project. I planned 7K and it is now @ 9K just because of the unexpected costs. Plan, research, make notes, and then do it, it makes it much easier IMO. ASK QUESTIONS and more questions. Good luck with your builds

      Motor: 2004 LS6
Transmission: T-56 built by local Trans Guru
Transmission Crossmember: Custom fab at home
      Fuel Tank: Ricks vaporworx
Headers: (brand, size and finish) Edelbrock LS for 67-69 Camaro
Motor Mounts: Energy Suspension LS swap kit (3-1147G I think)
Oil Pan: Factory 4th Gen Camaro
      Stock/Modified/Replaced Subframe: Heidt's Pro-G subframe
Exhaust used: N/A yet-I have a prodigy bar in the back and I hear that exhaust pipes are a challenge to route due to the cross support bars, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there!
      Radiator Used: Entropy
Wiring Harness: Factory Engine; American Autowire, classic update; entropy electric fan wiring harness
What issues came up? The Heidt's frame moves the engine forward an inch or so, so the T56 thankfuly fit with no trans tunnel interference, but the supplied trans crossmember did not fit the T-56.
How did you solve them? Fabricated a custom crossmember
What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers? PATIENCE! Not everything will always go right, and there should be some expectation of problems when introducing new technology to 40 year old technology..patience and the ability to "walk away" when getting frustrated with something for a little bit go a long way. Never doubt the healing power of taking a short break when things get annoying. Aggrivation and power tools leads to component damage!

      Transmission Crossmember: ATS
      Fuel Tank: Spectra Premium
Headers: (brand, size and finish) 1 3/4 Doug Thorley LS1 swap headers (Car was used for prototyping the headers)
Motor Mounts: ATS adapter plates-early style small block mounts
      Oil Pan: 2002 Camaro
      Stock/Modified/Replaced Subframe: Stock
Exhaust used: Custom 2 1/2 aluminum pipes-Flowmaster Delta 50 mufflers
Radiator Used: AFCO (made for swapping the LS1 into 2nd gens)
Wiring Harness: Speartech with PCM mounted under dash
What issues came up? Probably could come up with a long list of small things like the configuration of the fuel lines, mounting of the PCM and clutch master cylinder, ect.
How did you solve them? Used stock type steel fuel line, modified with push connect flares and built factory type fuel hoses. Used Corvette fuel filter. Clutch master cylinder bracket from a 3rd gen Camaro modified and bolted to the brake master cylinder/booster.
What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers? Take your time, plan everything out, do lots of research and ask lots of questions. It's not really all that difficult but almost everything needs to be changed or reworked.

Had to move crossmember forward 1.25" for Magnum transmission, not a big deal. Making sure to pull clean air between MAF & TB for crankcase ventilation while building my cold air intake. Building a power steering line from the pump to the box that clears the pump pulley.

I'm sure I'll think of more to add.

How do you like that AM front clip? I am just about ready to order one instead of buying a Lee box and DS uppers and lowers.
