T-56 Rebuild & Mechanical Speedo Conversion

I have a 96 LT1 style T-56 in my Nova that recently bit the dust.

I started looking for a local rebuilder and also wanted to find someone to do a mechanical speedo conversion as well. I just did not want to add the Abbot box, or an electronic speedometer.

A friend of mine told me of Tick Performance in Mooresville, NC. These are the guys that manufacture the adjustable master cylinders for the newer LSX cars.

They ended up being able to do the mechanical speedo conversion and rebuilt/upgraded my trans as well.

The trans feels like a new unit, and it is nice to see my speedo working again.

What caused it (trans?) to bite the dust?

      Mechanical Speedo

For anyone looking for a mechanical speedo on a T56, I would call Jason at Texas Drivetrain Performance. He did my T56. I switched to a 03/04 Cobra tail shaft housing to located my shifter int the stock location for my 69 Camaro. Jason does great work and is very reasonable.

I started to go that route with the cobra tail housing.
Were you able to run the better Cobra 5th & 6th gear ratios as well?

The shifter position is definately better!!

We need to check up one day. I am in the Hickory area.

      Hi Randy,

The internals of the trans are still the same. This trans was sourced from a 96 F Body, so I had to swap the front bearing cover and input shaft from the LT to LS stuff. Im not sure exactly what had to be machined on the housing, but I know it wasnt a bolt on. I know Jason had to machine the seal area to accept the correct output seal. He also had to machine the output shaft to accept the speedo gear.

Jason does great work and I would highly recommend him. He even gave me a credit for my LT parts that i didnt need towards the cost of this swap.

I did see your car at the GoodGuys show this year but didn't get to talk to you. We will have to get up some time. My car is "almost" on the road.

I think the shifter was within 3/8" of the factory Muncie shifter location.
