Well, another evening in the shop mostly figuring stuff out. I sacrificed a coat hanger to the cause… I moved the axle up in the wheel well until it came into contact with the bump stops which also happens to be where the 3rd link mount contacts the trunk floor pan. I think I may modify both of these in order to get a bit more travel/drop. I’ll wait until the wheels and tires are mounted first though. No sense in doing all that work if the tires rub…

As you can see below, the Magnaflow exhaust showed up today. Nice piece of kit! Almost a shame to put it under the car with the shape its currently in…

Welded up another end link for mock up. I’m going to run spherical rod ends at the front of all of the links but I’ll also run spacers on them so I can switch out to bushings later if I want to.

Also cut out a wooden template for the 3rd link. Made the link out of 1/4″ steel as it needs to be pretty stout considering it’s not straight. Just tacked together right now, I’ll box it and finish weld once I know it fits. I didnt get to it tonight as the end links take forever to cool after welding. I also need to clean up the cuts some more too. All of my flap wheels bit the dust tonight…

I have the 3 inch Magna flow on my Mustang and it is a nice kit but they do tend to hang kinda low. You can rework them though to fit up tighter to the floor pan if you cut the weld at the x pipe and play with it, atleast that is what I had to do. Looks Great. Scott

Thanks for the info! Ya, thats part of the reason I went with the 2.5", that and I'm going to be sub 400 hp so I didnt see the need for 3". I do plan to re-work it to maximize ground clearance for sure. I'm awaiting a set of raw stainless JBA mid length header. I have to fab the pipes from there to the Magnaflow so that'll help me keep it high and tight.

Justin and I went out this morning is search of materials. I found everything I needed including the DOM tubing for the links and panhard bar. Nice. All of the hardware for the entire rear suspension is stainless. Not cheap but not all that bad when compared to zinc grade 8.

My lower link/shock mounts werent quite long enough for me to acheive a 100% Antisquat so I extended them by about 0.75". Doesnt sound like much but was at least 4 hours of fab work. One of those days you wish you had a water jet or a CNC plasma....

Anyway, here are some shots of todays progress. Tomorrow is going to be a big day with some huge progress!

Well, I spent about 30 hours in the shop this weekend and it paid off. I finished the fab work on the shock mounts as well as the upper 3rd link mount.

As you can see from the photos, I used the stock upper shock mounts as the additiona support for the 3rd link mount. I spent a lot of time under the car on my back and came to this conclusion: the stock stamped shock crossmember would provice more strength and, more importantly, less defelection than a tubing cross member that extended to the frame rails. Depending on packaging once the exhaust goes in I may connect the 2 "arms" together with another piece of tubing.

I cut a piece of the trunk floor pan away in order to give clearence for the upper shock mounts as well as providing more supension travel as the upper axle 3rd link mount may have contacted the floor when bottomed out.

Next up is the sway bar and the panhard bar. To be able to fab these I need to get the exhaust temporarily installed to establish spacing. Off to Princess Auto to get some more of the tall jack stands so I can raise the car up some more as well as support the exhaust for mockup.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can pilfer a 3/4 sway bar that's straight and about 40"+ wide?

      Cheers,

      Wes

Well, almost done the modifications to the column. I re-assembled the column last night including the rebuild kit. Because of the fact that I had to cut the column off of the steering box, I had to build a lower bearing section. So, I stopped by a shop last week and grabbed a sealed bearing. Last night I finished turning the bearing section and pressed in the bearing. Then I machined a collar to hold the whole shooting match together. Prior to re-assembly I machined flats into the steering shaft to accept the u-joint.

Tonight I’ll drill and tap the bearing section and collar and I’ll have a finished column.
