      Formula 1

Did anyone see the Formula 1 race over the weekend? Felipe Massa was hit in the head by a rear heave spring as he went down the straight. The reports said he'll be ok following drilling holes in his head releasing the pressure on his brain.

I was wondering, has anyone seen pictures of his helmet? What brand was it and what kind of damage did is sustain from the impact with the metal spring?

I missed it, but I found what happened on YouTube. Pretty gnarly, if you ask me. Here's a link to the video that shows the damage to his helmet.

The accident did not happen during the race. It was either practice or qualifying. He is supposed to be in a drug induced comma for a day or so more but should be ok but may never race again. It will be a long recovery.

This is what happens when you get hit with a spring at high speeds.

Last I heard the situation with him was uncertain. Glad to hear he is on the road to a recovery. More than likely he won't recover enough to return to any kind of racing, but I just wish that the fullest possible recovery is in his future.

      God speed.

That's the first pic I've seen of the helmet. Can you say lucky! 1" lower and that 800 gram spring would have made it all the way in.
Latest is that Massa might be out of hospital in 10 days or so. Really recovering well without any signs of permanent damage (yet).
Really scary after seeing Henry Surtees getting killed by a wheel just days prior.

Dave Despain did a very good little editorial about race safety on Wind tunnel on Sunday night.

Similar incident killed Darrel Russell in Top Fuel a few years back, exploded engine parts entered his helmet from behind, forcing teams to enclose the cockpit fully.

      Sad about Massa...

Yeah I was watching that Qualifying live. Massa got lucky (If you can call it that). It was just inches away from being deadly. Those heavy springs are no soft material! If it was one of the softer springs it may not have been so bad.

Very lucky guy, wish him a speedy and full recovery. Just goes to show the importance of good safety equipment. How many of us have spent $3000 on wheels, and bitched about a $200 helmet!

Yup Just read Michael Schumacher is coming out of retirement to replace Massa for now.

Massa is recovering well and can see out of his left eye which was what they were worried about.

Other news: BMW is dropping out of F1 for next year.

I thought about that when Alonso's wheel came off during the race...

Different series. The Surtees accident was a a lower series. The tire came off and hit him in the head killing him, Alonso's wheel came off Sunday during the F-1 race and hit no one.

Surtees was in F2, where they run a Williams made spec chassis with *full* F1 safety features (including wheel tethers). But it's not really about this or that safety feature - it's about having an open cockpit. Enclosed cockpits anyone? No thanks!

Seeing Schumi drive again will be interesting! Might get some good developments on the car, he's a wizard.

      Hey, no problem...

It will be interesting to see how Schuhmacher will do without a Ross Brawn behind him...
