      e: Paint stripping/e-coating auto body

      Eddie,
I don't know of a current place to get it stripped, but e-coating is only available at the manufacturer's level due to the expense and complexity. If you do get it dipped, know that the liquid gets in every hidden area. If its not rinsed (neutralized) properly, it will eventually destroy whatever coating you put on top of it. Ask for referrals, and try to find someone who has already painted their car, and ask them if they've had any problems.

      Where are you in Houston?

I'm in the Garden Oaks/Heights area.

I found a few places that would strip and e-coat the shells, but didn't want to ship it out of state (closest one I can find is 400+ miles away) ... Starting to sound like my only option though. You'd think in a city the size of Houston that we'd have something like that.

I am also looking for this as I am in the DFW area. Where did you find someone to do this. Maybe we can get a multiple car discount?

Actually, you are incorrect about e-coating. I had mine done, but I went to Michigan to have the body alkaline dipped and e-coated. http://redi-coat.com/ The parts were e-coated at local company. The problem is finding a tank that is large enough to e-coat a body. I contacted PPG in Michigan and they gave me a list of their customers that have tanks large enough to e-coat a body. There was no issues in painting the car, but you do have to scuff the entire car to get primer to stick.

Here is a link to my website with some photos of the e-coated body.

Eddie, in regards to your question. I do not know of company that has an E-coat facility in Texas. I think the closest one is in Mississippi. http://www.sec-ms.com

I'd take my car over to Mississippi to have it coated for sure. E-coat is great stuff.

Gearhead Dude is absolutely right. I know someone who has had it done and the car was not rinsed throughly and in the hidden places you may have problems. You won't know until you do further work on the car, like replacing fender panels or other hidden body work.

Thanks, Eddie! It is a lot of work though. You do have scuff or sand with 240 grit sand paper, all the shiny spots on the entire car. The rotisserie came in handy, because I could get all the areas. Just takes a lot of time to do it. Then we went an primed and painted those areas too. All parts of my car was painted inside and outside.

FWIW: I learned that SodaBlast Systems (www.stripyourcar.com) near Pearland on BW8 will soda blast anything. I don't have any personal experience with them, but they build the equipment so they should know what they're doing. May be worth checking out.

Lot of people having problems with soda blasting. SPI has warnings all over their products to to apply over any panels that were blasted with soda. Get on any body forum and search the word soda and you will see what I mean.
