I have the one from Lingenfelter. Good book, lots of insight. I mostly bought it for some info, and because I was obsessed with anything Lingenfelter. Great guy, lots of knowledge, untimely death. Imagine if he was around today.

      All of them.

      Seriously.

I read all I can about high performance engines. I have quite a library- from Harry Ricardo to Smokey Yunick and more. You can't get enough information in my opinion.

But, I'm not one to put all my eggs in a single basket either. Some of the books disagree with each other about certain things, so it pays to get several opinions and weigh things out.

I also have some experience building engines, so what I've learned figures in as well.

If you're looking to learn about the design, assembly, and tuning of high performance engines, get all the information you possibly can from as many sources as possible, and study it completely. There's no one, single book that can teach you everything or answer all questions.

I just noticed you say your 18 years old.

The advice I'm about to give you could impact your life if you take it seriously.

Get these two books if you can find them:

      The High-Speed Internal Combustion Engine
      by Sir Harry Ricardo
Published by Blackie and Son Limited (London and Glasgow)
      First issued 1923
      Reprinted 1931, 1941, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1958, 1960, 1962, 1964, and 1967.

There's a reason it was reprinted so many times.

Second on your list should be:
      The Gas and Oil Engine
      by Dugald Clerk
Published by John Wiley and Sons, New York
      First Issued 1886
      reissued six times by 1896
My issue is an 1899 printing.

If you want to know how high-performance engines work, you have to go back to the beginning. Way back. See what they thought and learned and tried when gasoline engines were a brand new idea.

Everything you learn afterwards will make more sense.

I wish I'd have had these books when I was 18 instead of discovering them in my 30s. I might have been somebody if I'd had them.

If you are ever fortunate enough to meet a truly great engine builder, ask them about Harry Ricardo. I promise you- all the great ones know all about his work.
