Input needed on a good A-Body steering box

      Hello,

can anyone guide me in the right direction for upgrading the steering in my 70 Skylark? It’s being built to be somewhat of a daily driver (2/3x week) with the occasional autocrossing.

The one finger steering is ok, but I’d like to modernize it and give it a heavier and sportier feeling. Can anyone give me an option as to what steering box I should choose?

So far I’m looking at Speedtechs 12:1 Sweet Box. If anyone is already using this, what are your thoughts on it?

      All input greatly appreciated

A Jeep Grand Cherokee is a cost effective good option. Been happy with it for street and autox duty

Only problem with jeep box is the need for new hoses and or adapters for the metric fittings , obviously lower pressure return is fine with a hose clamp but the high pressure would have to be a custom job

I bought a rebuilt fast ratio from a guy on Facebook named Hector Carillo, his business is Carhex and he specializes in GM A-bodies. I believe it was 140 bucks but prices may have changed. If your interested PM me and I can get you his phone number.

Jeep box for the cheapest upgrade. Turn-one or sweet performance would be a good choice if you had a bigger budget. Turn one makes boxes for nascar and most high levels or racing, which makes them top tier. The 670 box is superior in weight reduction, spool-valve technology, and precision. The 800 series boxes like the Jeep are great, but are heavier and do not have the rack an pinion valving mods the 670 has.

I have the Jeep box in my 1970 442. It's not a finished build yet tho.

IIRC the ratio is 16:1 and goes to 12:1 or vice versa, I'm drinking my coffee so I can't remember. lol

Haven't done the hoses yet, but several have and it works. Lowest cost option.

I've had my Grand Cherokee box for a couple years and love it! Single best bolt on you can do to completely change the feel of your car.

There are press in fittings for the metric boxes like the Jeep or 80s IROC box to use SAE flare hoses. The threads are close enough to use SAE size. Lee used to sell them when they were open I have seen other folks carry them also. So no need to change hoses.

Rag joint spline though is often different.

Send your box to a place like this and have it rebuilt: https://benchworksteering.com/

They re-geared the box from our Chevelle to a quick ratio and changed the torsion rod to give the wheel more feeling & weight. Since it's your stock box, there's nothing that needs to be changed to fit it in the car.

Can't remember the cost, but it wasn't bad. Also, they told me if I didn't like how it felt we could send it back and they would fix it. Great guys to work with.

LEE has been reopened for a while now. From my understanding he sold the business and does some consulting when needed.

I have a metric GTA (3rd Gen) box in my firebird. I think it was just a matter of a new rag joint. Maybe something more for a skylark like a pitman arm. Here's a link I think you'll want to check out: https://www.hotrod.com/articles/ccrp...g-box-upgrade/
