      Whats your stall rear gear combo?

      Hey guys, I completed my swap and am using a 3200 stall (by transmission specialties inc) with a 4L80e. My rear gear is 3.31 (I think).

      Anyways, the car used to be a 396 with a muncie 4 speed. It would toast the tires on demand. The new combo feels sluggish. I need to verify the rear gear.

      But whats your combo and how do you like it? how does it feel?

      I had a 4L60E with a 3600-3800 stall torque converter, 2.78 rear gear. and 26" drag radials. It did not feel sluggish, was always in the powerband at WOT. It had a circle D billet front cover converter. I haven't driven it much with the 4L80e although it felt slower and has a lower stall speed. My car may just need to be tuned better with the new trans.

      Just verified. I can't do brake stand. I think first gear in the 4 speed was 2.96. The 4l80e is 2.48. I can't even get to the stall rpm while flat footing the pedal. Hydroboost might be playing a part too.

      3.73 being delivered Tuesday. If that doesn't put a smile on my face I'm going to find an expert with a dyno.

      No idea. Stall and flash and auto trans is all voodoo to me. I figured the best way to learn was to just dive right in.

      Everyone i talked to said a good converter would be kinda tight to retain street manners. Tightness = efficiency?

      If the T56 option wasnt so expensive I would be tempted to pull everything back out and go that route. No TC, no issue.

      I had a 2500 stall pro torque converter and it wasn't too tight, but that may have been because of the high gears(2.78). The Circle d converter I had was way more fun. With the circle D I could foot brake it to about 3000rpms I think. Though on a slight incline it probably needed close to 2000rpms to get moving. This is all with the 4L60e which has a 3.059 1st gear. The 4L80e is out of my car now, but should be going back in hopefully sometime this month. It has a 3500 stall torque converter from jakes.

      Stall speed is normally based on rear gear, rear tire size, vehicle weight, and how your engine builds power. The most important being how the engine is building power. This is why you will see any good converter builder want to know what your cam specs are. That way they can determine at what point your engine is going to start building torque. Most mild cam engines will do best with a 2000-2400 stall speed, stock engines do well with 1800-2000, the higher in the RPM range before your engine starts to build torque the higher the stall speed to an extent.

      Hi Craig, I understand that. It aligns with everything Ive read. I wont put any names here of course but I called 3 different TC builders and they all gave me different answers on what they wanted to build for me. Which just confused me more lol. At this point in the driving season Im just going to drive the car like it is, get the tuning under control, and order a different stall in the spring next year..............or put the "man" pedal back in.

      I have not enough of either in my SCamp...well all kidding aside I have a 2,100 stall convertor on about a 2.80 1st gear, with 3.91 final. Car needs a 4L80E and a 3,200 stall to get into boost faster. I've done this trick before and the right converter is worth a second in the quarter mile! No joke. Get a good one with a good lockup clutch!

      Hi Bart, I have gotten different recommendations also on stall speed from different converter builders. BTW I just had my jakes converter re-stalled to 4000 from 3500. Should be more fun.
