Rookie question about covering door panels

I'm about to put the leather on my Fesler door panels and was curious if people generally just put the leather directly on the panel or if you put volara or similar under it to soften the feel a bit. Not making any designs, just going for the smooth look like this. Thanks for any info

I generally pad only the insert material and leave the outside unpadded as this is where you have to stretch and heat to conform to the panel curves.

Makes sense, thanks. Not sure if it was you or not but I think I read some upholstery stuff by someone with the same or similar name on a different car forum this morning. Anyway, the plan so far is to do as you say and then get something thin foam, maybe 1/8, under some carbon fiber material for the insert where the arm rest is to soften up the contact point. https://www.yourautotrim.com/cafisob.html

Just came across someone who had done it before. If this first try goes will I'll look into doing something more interesting with the inserts later but for now I'll start simple. https://www.pro-touring.com/threads/...mp-Resto/page5

Not a huge fan of the Fesler arm rests though so currently looking around at options.

How's the fit of the Fesler panels? Can't seem to find much info on them.

I'm in NC until Monday so won't get to mess with them until then, but yeah there isn't a ton of stuff to go on, especially for convertibles. Once I get back to Nashville I'll post up pics here and the whole install over on ls1tech. From the instructions they emailed me the install itself looks pretty straightforward though I will likely end up having to ditch my remote driver's side mirror and relocate my rear power window switches. Not deal breakers by any means however.
