Put A Hole In My Trunk!

Not as bad as it sounds. I've always wanted to put a door in the floor of my Camaro in case I needed to get to my tank sending unit for some reason or the other. I finally bought a Stainless Steel door and boy am I glad I did. I had a mechanic here in town install my new Tanks Inc, tank, sending unit, and fuel pump. Last week I found out the hard way the sending unit wasn't set right. Coming home from a drive around town I ran out of gas. The gauge showed just over 1/4 tank. So instead of me climbing under the car and dropping the tank I thought it was time to order the door and get it installed. Here is how it turned out..

Steve, I'm just getting too old to crawl around under my car and pull the gas tank. Man, this made it easier.. Cost for the door was around $48 at Summit.

Here is another option. Can be installed with panel adhesive if you don’t want to weld.

If you look closely, the cream colored stuff under the door is actually bondo. I put clear packaging tape around the door itself so the bondo wouldn't stick to it, taped an outline on the trunk floor and put the bondo on the floor. Next I put the door on the bondo and since I already had already put two screw holes in the floor I screwed the door back down to the floor. The reason I did this is because the bottom of the trunk floor has several ridges etc. The bondo filled these ridges and small valley's and gave the door a flat surface. I couldn't put the screws in all the holes because the tank was sitting within a 1/8" of the floor. After the bondo set up I trimmed around the door (still in place) and removed the door to trim the inside. The door is held on with 3M double sided tape and some SS screws. My thoughts were to seal it as tight as I could so fumes didn't come into the trunk area. I used this bondo/clear tape method when I built the panels for the trunk. I can discuss that in more detail if someone is interested.

I used a piece of replacement floor panel cut wider than the hole I cut, so that it matched the ridges of the floor, worked great.

Nice. This is something I thought about doing, didn't do, then regretted it. Would be nice to have access right there.

I like this idea. Steve would you share what door you choose at Summit?

      Great idea!
I thought about it but talked myself out of doing it before I put in a new tank in my Cuda. First time I tried to fire the engine, I found a slit AN fitting on the tank. So I had to pull the tank down and decided to kick my butt for not doing in before. Ordered a stainless door from Tanks and installed it. Live and learn lol
      Cheers!
