      T56 A-Body

      Hey guys,

I always read how people drop a T56 into their A-body cars. Well I want to do the same to my '70Skylark.

Does it have to be a specific year/model T56 or will any of them work such as this local one for sale on Craigslist?

      Thank you for reading

I prefer the LS version of the T56 over the LT. You can swap the LS faceplate on the LT version, but they aren't any cheaper and the faceplate adds more cost.

I suggest looking for a late 90s T56 out of a Camaro/firebird. Then get ready for the surgery required to the trans tunnel to get it installed.

      @andrewb70

My bad, I saw the manual transmission forum right after I posted it in the drivetrain forum. I'll remove it right now unless it's been moved already.

I'm trying to pair it with a 1970 Buick 350 engine. Instead of paying retail 3k for a new t56, I want to put a list together to see if it will be cheaper just to get a 90's T56 along with whatever other parts needed to make the swap work.

I just finished rebuilding my own lt1 t56 for my 72 chevelle.
I cut the floor from the firewall, all the way back to where the rear seat starts.
Im going up about 2 inches and made my floor braces taller and wider.
I still need sheet metal to make my floor.
Make sure to cut off the extra tab on the upper trans body to get more floor pan clearance on the driver side.
If you need help pm me you email or # and i can share my tips more.

Oh,and how low your car will determine how much for the floor you'll have to cut and how high up you'll need to make the tunnel

Maybe Quicktime makes a BOP to T56 bellhousing?

It's more about getting the drive line angles correct. When they are correct the trans will not be hanging down so ride height will not matter.

When the car his lowered more that 2.00 the driveshaft is very close to the braces under the floor pan, when you lower,in my case a 72chevelle rear pinion of the diff is pushed up alot higher into the body, and there NEEDS to be room to clear the driveshaft yokes.
This body style has such a small and narrow trans tunnel down the middle. The 1stgen camaros, heck even my daughters 68 mustang has alot more room for a T56! Hahaha.
I saw how much of the floor you cut out on your 65 cutlass,to say ride does not matter is wrong, btw with a lowered abody IN MY CASE,the trans needed to go up to get the correct drive angles correct.
To the op,putting a T56 in Abodies take some work and money so be ready!

I bought my bell housing from a company called Weir hot rod products. It is a very nice piece especially for the BOP engines.
