What a solid car! Seem like all the cars from that era have swiss cheese floors and rockers. Should be a great car when you're done.

Cool project! I love the 50's Fords... which is why I just picked up a 57 Custom 300 sedan for a future project.

I'll be watching for updates, great looking car. Don't junk the Y-block. Still lots of guys want them. Is it a 312, or 292?

Geoff, here ya go!! This is how I determined the 312 powered 57 Tbird sold to my dad years ago was actually a 292. But that is another story......

Great car! I love pro touring 50's cars. My only advice is keep the Y block and build it. You can make great power with it. Go for a GM transmission behind it and it's perfect. The 4.6 is crap unless you go all the way and get an 03 Cobra motor or a new Coyote, both are big $$$.

A lot of people have been hammering me on other sites about not using the Y-Block. I am going to research it. I have a few 4.6's and a Coyote laying around the shop so makes that route enticing.

Check out ford-y-block.com. Alum heads, stroker kits, the whole nine yards. You can make 450-500hp with it. I build motors, pm me if you need help with it.

Thanks! I am going to check it out.

Just looked at the engine, it is a 272.

that decision, of course, is up to you.....
what are you going for- a period correct car that runs & drives better than when new, using 60 year old technology with modern aftermarket parts..... or a modern take on a classic car with FI, modern reliability & all the bells & whistles?
Since this is Pro-T not the HAMB you know which way I am leaning.
fwiw, I am a fan of both directions & looking forward to checking in on your build.

There is a guy selling 292 blocks on ebay for $100. Go as big as you can with the best heads you can afford. I would pair it with a TH350 w/ low gear kit, 200r4, or 4L65 or just go manual. Depends on final plan with it and budget.

If you want to keep it all Ford, go for an AOD with a low gear kit and Precision converter, expensive but works. What sucks is will not go full throttle OD. I have gone 3/4 with one to about 140mph, but it's asking for it.

If pro touring is about improving all the original parts, there would be no discussion about the 272. I am really old. I have a long history with all the engines starting after the flatheads. There will be no going back for me. It's your project, your decision. Usually the one paying the bills makes the decision. All your projects so far have all been about improving. I'll go back to watching.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the input. This build isn't for me but for a client. I am one that never keeps anything stock ever. I buy a new vehicle and it's changed up immediately. This build is a different story for two reasons. (1) It isn't for me and (2) There is a tight budget. I didn't even know what a Y Block Engine was until I started posting this one on various forums. Regardless of the engine it will be fuel injected, have an automatic overdrive, better brakes, power steering and A/C. It ran and drove when we got it. This week I'll take a better look at the engine and see what we have. The end user of the vehicle is in his 80's (this is the year and make of his first car) , one paying the bills is his son.
