"eBay Gold" - Garage Build, 71' C10 Racetruck

Last year my brother and I set out to build our ultimate race/shop truck out of his garage in Northern California. We picked up a 1971 Chevrolet C10, SWB Super Cheyenne pickup truck off eBay that needed some serious love, but was the perfect candidate for our build.

Project Goals: Go Fast, Stop Fast, Handle (Lowered, on coil-overs, 6-speed, LS swap, roll bar & more).

Below is a pic of what we started with and a rendering our friend at Busted Knuckles Customs put together for us. We've made some headway to date, but a lot more work to go to get this rig on the road by spring. More updates to come as our build progresses and gets closer to the finish line.

The C10 was all there, running & driving when we went to pick it up after winning the bid on eBay. Truck was built in Detroit and had seen its fair share of winters. Motor ran, trans was tired but everything was there to turn this ranch truck into a runner. Original truck pics below from the day we picked her up - Next project was to pull the motor.

Got the truck home and parked it in the garage next to the 66' Cummins Ford Bronco my brother and I built years ago (He's smart and held onto his high school car - another story).

With the C10 home, we pulled the motor & trans. Motor that was in the truck was a 383 with a TH350 trans. Going for an LS with T56 6-speed trans. More on this soon.

Nice! I'm hoping to pick a C10 up this month.
1967 mustang coupe, bilstein shocks, maier racing leaf springs and 600 lb front springs. Holley 670 cfm carb and edelbrock performer rpm air gap. I have done a lot to it and and have a lot to do.

To get the C10 down on the ground, have the ability to handle & deliver some power, here's the recipe and some part #'s to break down what we ended up going with for the motor, chassis, wheels & tires, etc.

      Engine & Trans:
      - 1999 Chevy Camaro 5.7L LS1 - Craigslist
      - 2001 Chevy Camaro T56 6-Speed - Craigslist
      - 2014 Chevy Corvette LS7 Clutch
      - Wilwood master cylinder, Part # 260-9439

      Chassis & Suspension:

      Front
      - Scotts Hot Rods 67-72, C10 Bolt-In IFS
      - Wilwood Pro Spindles (2 Inch Drop) Part # 830-9807
      - Wilwood Disc Brakes, 14" Front, Part # 140-9920-D, E-Coat & BP-20 brake pads
      - Aldan American Regulator Series coil-overs, Part # AS-656RS (13.0")
      - Aldan American coil-springs, Part # 9-600BK2 (2.5" ID x 9" x 600 lb)

      Rear
      - Custom trailing arm with coil-over setup, c-notch
      - 12-Bolt, Posi rear end with 4:11 gears (Eaton)
      - Watts Link - Outlaw Kustoms
      - POL 60-72 C10 tubular trailing arms (Set), Part # TTA6072
      - POL 63-72 trailing arm crossmember, Part # DDX6372
      - Wilwood Disc Brakes, 12" Rear, Part # 140-12569-D, E-Coat & BP-20 brake pads
      - Aldan American Regulator Series coil-overs, Part # AS-658RS (16.5")
      - Aldan American coil-springs, Part # 12-300BK2 (2.5" ID x 12" x 300 lb)

      Wheels & Tires
      - Intro Wheels, "Bullet" - 18x10 Front, 18x12" Rear (Powdercoated Black)
      - Nitto 555R, 335/30ZR18, 285/35ZR18

For the motor, we were on the hunt for a used LS. Hitting Craigslist and eBay my brother and I were looking for the most bang for our buck. Needed something solid that we could make 400hp+ with and bolt up to a T56 and our Scotts Hot Rods IFS. We came across an ad for a used 5.7L LS1 out of a 99’ Camaro SS.

My brother went out to take a look at the motor and said this was the one. Motor apparently was just blueprinted & built only having 40 miles on it before the previous owner crashed his SS on the freeway going 130+ mph. “Last time this motor was running, it was running from the cops” - per the previous owner. He was going away for his police chase and we may or may not have got a great deal on our new LS1 – More to come once we get her installed & hopefully fired up.

Nice truck and awesome parts list! Are you going to keep the gold and white 2 tone paint scheme? I kinda like it.

Hi Adam, thank you! The gold & white OE paint scheme is pretty cool. We ended up going with a Porsche color called "Fashion Grey" similar to the rendering above. I'll have more pics on this soon.

Motor and trans out, now time to strip the truck and get down to the factory frame to see what's there and start working on the suspension. Bed came off (Decent shape), removed cab, fenders, etc. and started/finished the C Notch in the rear. Also installed the Performance Online trailing arm crossmember. Factory frame turned out to be straight and square (Thankfully)

C-Notch completed on the C10, now came time to mock everything up for the shock tabs, watts link/mounting tabs and determining wheel & tire sizes.

Cortez Tire in El Monte hooked us up with a take off tire off a Murcielago (Very close to the Nitto 555R - 335/30ZR18 we ended up running in the rear).

We also test fit an Intro Wheel, "Bullet" - 18x12" Rear (Ended up ordering these custom from Cortez Tire in El Monte, CA. 18x10 are off the shelf, we had to have one 18x12 made, test fit and then ordered the remaining rear wheel to match)

Mocked up the rear coil-over tabs with a mockup coil-over and one of the final Aldan American Regulator Series coil-overs we ended up running AS-658RS (16.5" extended with 5.0" of travel)

Tacked coil-over upper mounts to the outside of the frame and the lower mounts to the axle.

Next up was disassembling rear chassis components, paint the frame and start on the Scotts Hot Rods IFS install. . .
