F- body 2gen. Fuel tank relocation

I raised this question earlier but didn't get much respond. So I try again.

On the 2gen; the fuel tank from a Opel manta fits perfect between the rear inne wheel housings. this is approx 50l.

- I will still have enough room in the trunk.
- Removing the tank from trunk floor I can use this place for mufflers. No more damaged mufflers.
- Can use a filler Aero/MC style filler cap on top of fender.

BUT what will happen with the weight distrubution ? Relocate from the rear of axle to top of axle ?

Front/rear will improve but I suspect the higher CG from a full tank of fuel sitting that high up will be detrimental to handling .

There's an area behind the rear tires where you could possibly fit mufflers and use the stock gas tank placement. It'll be tight with leaf springs but you do it. You'd have more clearance with link suspension in that area.

Thinking a bit out of the box, 5th-6th gen Camaros have the fuel tank under the rear seat, like a lot of modern cars. Only issue I could is driveshaft clearance, the IRS keeps the driveshaft relatively stationary, while your drive shaft moves with the rear axle. Not sure on how much clearance you would have. The fuel tank is above the driveshaft at least. Just an idea.

Olav I would think you wouldn't see much difference in handling if you use the tank space for a big muffler or a pair. Unless you're going for some super light titanium mufflers.
