      Hi Josh,

I do quite a few of these with Wilwood brakes made specifically for the Speedway Mod Lite floater rear ends. It is a Superlite 4P system with 12.88" rotors & parking brake for $1599.

It costs $100 to have the brackets welded on. Then it's a bolt on for you.

There are less expensive rear brake setups without parking brakes.

I apologize. Sometimes we talk about stuff like everyone knows about them. I'll be brief ...

Typical muscle car rear ends came with 1-piece flange axles with a single bearing supporting the end, typically a ball bearing or open faced roller bearing. The amazing high grip g-force loads that we put on these axles with modern tires & suspensions causes the flanges to flex, snap back, flex, snap back, etc. Combine this with modern large diameter rotors & solid mounted brake calipers ... and we get pad knock back. Meaning you have to double pump the brake pedal to have brakes. Continued high loading leads to broken axle flanges ... where the wheel & flange literally shear off the car & tear up the body in the process ... potentially leading to a high speed crash.

Lastly, the single bearing ... especially ball bearings ... were never designed to handle the kind of side loading we're putting on them with big tires & high grip in autocross & track day use.

Floater rear ends aren't new. They've been used practically forever in high load usages, especially racing. For road racing & oval track racing ... from shorts tracks to professional levels ... floater rear ends are the standard for performance & safety. They are called "floaters" because the hub ... that the wheel mounts to ... rides on dual tapered roller bearings ... and is separate from the axle itself. So if an axle breaks ... the wheel doesn't come off the car.

The axle is splined on both ends. One splined end goes in the differential of course, while the other splined end goes in a "drive plate" that bolts to the wheel hub.

The hub is supported by dual high thrust load tapered roller bearings, literally with 3 times the thrust load capacity of flange axle bearings. So the hub runs true with minimal deflection. Less chatter at the rear tires & basically zero brake pad knock back.

The bottom line is a little higher performance & a lot more safety ... for a few hundred dollars more than buying a new custom rear end with flange axles. These floater hub & bearing rear ends were designed for the kinds of loads we're putting on them today. If we increase the power, handling & braking, IMHO we need to beef up the rear end hub & axle assembly to handle it.

Speedway Engineering has been "the standard" in racing floater rear ends for decades. I've used them in everything from Trans Am & NASCAR race cars to triple duty Pro-Touring cars running street, autocross & road course track days. Hopefully that made sense. Best wishes & thanks for the question. I'm sure a lot of other guys wondered too.
