2015 Duel in the Desert Autocross Shootout Info and Qualifiers- Constant Update

“Duel in the Desert” Autocross Shootout Information

The Goodguys “Duel in the Desert” is an autocross shootout hosted every year at the Goodguys 18th Southwest Nationals in Scottsdale, Arizona. This shootout showcases some of the best autocross drivers in the country. This year Goodguys has teamed up with SCCA, OUSCS, and ASP, allowing winners from predetermined events to secure a spot in the shootout. Let’s take a look at the layout of the qualifying events to determine how you can possibly secure a spot and win the title Goodguys Autocrosser of the Year.

There are twenty-seven qualifying events around the country. Nineteen of those qualifiers are Goodguys autocross events. The other spots include two from the American Street Car Promotions, three from optima’s Search for the Ultimate Street Car Series and three from SCCA. (We’ve compiled a complete list of qualifiers at the bottom of the page.)

Whoever gets the fastest lap time in a pre 1973 vehicle at these twenty-seven qualifiers secures a spot to move on and compete at the “Duel in the Desert.” Besides these twenty-seven spots, there are an additional five openings, totaling thirty-two total competitors. Two of these five openings will be awarded to the drivers with the highest pro point standings (drivers who have already secured a spot by winning an event overall will not be considered in the point standings at the end of the year). The other three openings are decided the Friday before the shootout, where drivers will battle it out trying to secure the top three fastest lap times for the day. Confused yet? Let’s break it down a little more below:

There's a lot of inaccuracies in that list and the point totals are not up to date. I received an e-mail last week from GG telling me I qualified in.
If you didn't sign the paperwork and go through the winners circle as the invitee you likely didn't qualify in. You have to have the fastest time of the weekend or if the fastest qualifier turns down the invite it falls down the line in times until someone accepts it. If you want to go, I would, there's going to be at least 12 race in spots.

Yeah, I never won anything which was why I was confused.

I'm planning on going, but just gonna fly in and watch the action, maybe race a rental car on Sunday. If I got into the shootout, I'd just be Danny Popp's first victim. Haha

Why so many race-in spots this year? Im not complaining since I will be trying for one of those spots this year. Just wondering.

There are a number of us who qualified but are not making the trip to Scottsdale. At some point that creates more spots to race in. At the beginning of the season I believe they were only going to have 2 race in spots. Good luck, I hope you get a spot!

Like Keith said, there's been a lot of folks that decided not to make the trek out there.... pretty expensive venture to haul out there to race for a day and a half.

That is understandable. I was just comparing the amount of open spots to the past two years. There werent nearly as many. Goodguys AutoX losing steam?

That's interesting that there are more spots this year, but will it affect how many runs people get? A year or two ago my friend tried to race his way in but only got 3 runs all day while the pro class got considerably more runs. For me it's not worth the time to drag the car up there to hardly get any runs.

Also, will the track be different this time or will it be the same basic course they've been using for like 3 years?

I don't think it's losing steam overall, every one I attended this year had better than ever participation. For me it just didn't make financial sense, my wife also races so it's a big financial commitment to haul 2 cars from the east coast not to mention 10 days away from work. I would rather spend that time and money on upgrades and maintenance on the cars for next year.

The duel in the desert is a showcase event, planned that close to SEMA it allows the elite drivers to store there cars for a week after SEMA/optima and to race together again, I know last year everyone one ran Friday, about 3 or 4 runs and then Saturday was the race in qualifier (two runs) to get in and then you run the showcase event till you are eliminated or win so I ran 2(two) more before being taking out....but you can run another 4 times to reach the finals if your good....and then Sunday it was open to run a again for everyone, most pros pack it up and leave so on Sunday I ran 5 more times......this is an elite showcase event, not a seat time event....I run it to see where the car and myself stack up against top shoes from both coast and that gives myself a barometer on what to do for the next season
