CAM Challenge at Crows Landing. March 6-8

I know it is posted up in another area but I figured it is a timed event and should be posted here.

SCCA along with Speedway Motors is having an event at Crows Landing March 6-8. It is a qualifier for the Good Guys Finals in Scottsdale, AZ. as well as the SCCA championship in Lincoln, NE. Frank Stagnaro is designing the course at Crows which means it will be good and the area to run is HUGE!

Since Frank is designing the course, you can be assured that the course will be CAM friendly course and not a goat trail course. Frank's courses are great horsepower courses and you will definitely have fun.

      update from Bryan Nemy,

Word from the organizers is that there will be a sponsored dinner for all Saturday night and a welcome party Friday night. Also for the TnT on Friday there will be instructors available if you want to use them.

I noticed only 5 people are signed up. I hope the turn out is good for this event. I have a feeling that this event may not get too many people to attend. I think people are waiting to see what the weather is going to be for that weekend and if they can get tires in time. I think they scheduled this event a little to early in the year for northern California. They should have planned for May or held this event in southern california. Camarillo Airport would have been a good site if the March date was the only date that fit in the schedule.

That is why the American Autocross Series (AAS) was created 23 years ago and exists today. I remember when Larry Park and I were talking about creating the AAS and Larry told me that he was going to ask Frank to design his courses. Frank has been designing their courses ever since.

This sounds cool, and I'd totally go, but the USCA thing is the weekend before, at Thunderhill, and I'm already signed up (read: paid). I managed to hit one autocross at Marina with AAS last summer, and it was a great course--Stagnaro was there, as was Mary Pozzi. Life will unfortunately not allow for both . . .

Here is the weekend schedule for the CAM Challenge. From what I understand the first two events will be run in the Match Tour format and the final event in Lincoln will be a Pro-Solo format.

      Event Schedule
      Friday, March 6

      7:30 – 11:30 am Site Setup
11:00 - 6:00 pm Vendors on site with displays
      11:30 - 3:30 pm Test n Tune
      11:00 - 6:00 pm Event Tech Inspection
      3:30 - 6:00 pm Registration Check In
4:00 - 6:00 pm CAM Challenge Course open for walking
      6:15 pm Chiefs Meeting

No New Entries allowed after 6:00 pm

      Saturday, March 7

      6:30 am Site Opens
      6:45 – 7:45 am Late Check-in/Tech**
      8:00 - 9:30 am SCCA Worker Runs
8:15 am CAM Challenge Drivers Meeting
9:15 am CAM Cars to Grid
      9:30 - Noon CAM Challenge Session 1 (3 Runs)
Noon - 1:30 pm SCCA Worker Runs
      2:00 - 4:00 pm CAM Challenge Session 2 (3 Runs)
4:00 - Dark SCCA Worker Runs
6:30 pm Wilwood Dinner & Trophies in Livermore, CA

Dinner is allowed for all CAM and SCCA Workers and their family

      Sunday, March 8
      6:30 am Site Opens
7:30 am Course closed for walking
      8 - 9:30 am SCCA Worker Runs
9:30 - Noon CAM Challenge Session 3 (Shootout Qualifying) 3 runs
12:15 pm CAM Challenge Shootout Drivers Meeting
Noon - 1:00 pm SCCA Worker Runs
      1:30 - 3:30 pm CAM Challenge Session 4 (Shootout)
4:00 pm Awards presentation following Challenge Competition

Scheduled times and run orders are subject to change due to local restrictions and conditions.

So there will runs on a test course from 11-3 on Friday. On Saturday 3 runs guaranteed in the morning on a 55-60 sec. regular solo course. In the afternoon you will get a minimum of 3 more runs. The fastest morning and afternoon times added together will determine Saturday class winners. Top 2 in each class get an invite to Lincoln Invitational.

On Sunday everyone will get 3 runs again. The fastest 64 go into the Challenge Shootout to determine an overall winner. Top CAM S or CAM T driver gets an automatic invite to Good Guys Finale.

That sounds like quite a bit of good seat time on a quality high speed autocross course for a $75 entry fee.

Sure wish it was closer to me, I know I'd be there.

Just to give you an idea of the kind of course to expect:

Its well worth the entry fee. I have a prior engagement that I may duck out of to hit this up.

When the American Autocross Series first started and when Larry Park was alive, there was always an event during the Fourth of July and Larry called it the Firecracker 2 because the course was 2 miles long with an 8 cone 90 MPH slalom and 120 MPH straightaways, at least in an ESP 1LE Camaro. Now, that was fast. Over the years Frank toned it down because the four-bangers were whining and sniveling because they were running out of motor and gear.

They are allowing them as an experiment to see if it would work in the class.

Looks like there are 28 CAM cars entered so far in the first event this coming weekend.

Really, James?? If that's the case, how was my qualifying time faster than any of the runs I turned the day previous on the exact same course?

I don't think I've tried harder at any event than I did at this one ...
