Syracuse Nationals Car Show, known as the “Largest Car Show in the Northeast, held it’s annual event last weekend July 18-20th. Ranking higher in both car count and spectators than Goodguys Columbus; Syracuse Nationals has nearly doubled in size since 1999, when it first started. With over 8,000 cars, hundreds of vendors and around 30,000 spectators, this was the place to be if you owned a pre 1980 vehicle.

Within the past couple years, American Streetcar Series opened up an autocross at the Syracuse Nationals. With the help Detroit Speed, who sponsored the event, the autocross was a huge success. The process of putting together a great track started on Thursday for the ASCS crew. Here's a quick glance of the timelapse as the ASCS autocross course was constructed:

With 70 cars and 1200 laps throughout the three day course, it looked like everyone had a great time.

I say this every time I write about an ASCS event and I will say it again; if you have the chance to participate in one definitely sign-up. Bill, Brian and Yancy are some of the first pioneers to create more pro-touring race events across the country. When events like Run Through the Hills started, the event was about having fun, seeing friends, testing you car on the track and becoming a better driver. Years later, these three have still maintained the spirit of what they originally started. This can be seen in reading participants experiences on Facebook and watching all the videos posted through social media.

Ken Edwards brought his Mustang out to the ASCS event in Syracuse. I've known Ken for quite some time and he's always smiling and having a great time, but the smile as he received his award pictured below is probably one of the most rewarding smiles I have ever seen on his face. Congrats Ken, you did an amazing job out there.

Even if you don’t have a car, you can still go check out what all the fuss is about and leave at the end of the day feeling like you were part of the event. Eric Payne was a perfect example of this. He was not able to go to the event in 2013, but was determined to make it to this year's event. Rather than bringing a car, he brought out his Nikon and started to capture the action through his camera. The best thing about Eric's experience was that not only was he able to get up close for amazing shots, but he also had the opportunity to go for ride-alongs.

It looks like things went extremely smooth, the track was large, but technical and each vehicle got more laps around the track than most other events offer throughout the year. For any of you that know Bob Bertelsen, he has built some amazing cars over the past several years including his '72 Firebird called "Code Red," the '71 Camaro "Brute Force," and recently his '69 C10 Truck "Orange Rush." Here's a quick video of Bertelsen making his way around the autocross track:

This VW Bug also made quite a scene at the track. There was a lot going on under the hood of this '58 VW Bug including a V8; yes folks a VW bug with a V8. The thing was quick and looked like it hooked up pretty well around the course. Check it out for yourself:

Though running an autocross is a lot of work, the crew at ASCS always finds time to have some fun. As we kept up with their Facebook page throughout the weekend, we were able to see just how much fun they were truly having:

On Sunday Syracuse Nationals was open to all years, known as their American Muscle Sunday. This allowed people who owned a vehicle manufactured after 1980 to come out and try the autocross on Sunday. From the looks of it, all sorts of stuff came out to the track, even a Jeep.

As for the winners, well ASCS does things a little different than most other events. There are several awards handed out including top times and most improved. Many may not recognize the drivers or their cars as they posed with their awards, but that is what’s amazing about the ASCS events. Driver’s looking to get more seat time, have a great time and get to see old friends. This is what the American Streetcar Series is all about.
