      AFR guideplates

Putting the motor together, and made some subtle changes, most of which were suggested gasket changes, like the head gaskets. Glad I'm not in a hurry. This is a 68 302 bored 30 over. Bottom end is bolted together and rotates nicely. Torqued down the AFR 165s and started to torque the two piece adjustable guideplates and decided to call it a night when I couldn't get them lined up after the 3rd try, close, but not to my liking.

I can get them tight, and lined up, but when you torque them to 55lbs, they twist just enough to move the roller tips off center. I've heard of welding the plates, but not kind to welding on brand new hardened plates with a MIG. I'm thinking of using a stainless washer between the rocker stud and guideplates to let the washer take the torque of the stud rather than the guideplates. Anyone know why this wouldn't work or shouldn't be done? The washers are only .036 thick. Thoughts?
