      Project FIRST LOVE 67 Camaro

The camaro was purchased by my dad and I have owned it since 1972. Here is how it was for many years (the front sheet metal is just hung on for this photo). I butchered the fenders when I was young and stupid.

      To DO:
      Tubular a-arms
      Taller Spindles
Wide body Front & Rear Fenders
      Kore3 Brakes
      Wheels = Stay Tuned!
      Thinner Al Alloy Body Mounts
      Coil-over shocks and Mounts
      Custom Sub-frame Connectors
      Rocker Panel Body Kit?
      Roll Cage
      Custom Rear 3-Link someday
Fix the Location of the Front Bumper (A pet peeve of mine)
      Custom Billet Grill
      Console
      A Million other Details!

I forgot to show the original paperwork for the car. The purests will be going crazy that I am cutting up this virtually rust free car.

Widebody = Not as Easy as it looks!

The Pros on this site make it look effortless. When I pulled the rear fender skin out 2" there was a gap of about 1/2" at the top of the fender to the horizontal portion next to the sail panel. A release cut at the rear helped, but the horizontal bodyline goes up at the wheelwell. I think there is a widebody Mustang on the site that had 3 radial cuts above the wheelwell to allow the top of the rear fender to be pushed down. Will try this.
My other concern is the Camaro sides wrap way under versus current slab sided cars. When you push the wheels out this exacerbates the potential for massive rock chips down the side of the car. I pulled the bottom of the skins out to get a kind of splash guard both in front and back of the wheelwell. But now it looks fugley (like an 80's Nissan. I think?). It has a conical shape that looks worse in person. Couldn't exactly capture it in the photos. I have since relaxed the amount it is pulled out at the bottom. It looks better and I will probably get it wrapped along the lower body after paint.

I found some photos of Smokey Yunick's 68. I think my flares will look exactly the same. Also I will be doing a similar paint job. Just replace the gold with bright yellow and the black with dark blue.

      Some inspiration for colors.

      Larry,

This should be a really cool project. I am a slow builder too. Good luck and stay motivated. Look at my build for some 3-link ideas and front suspension as well.

      CAD Suspension Layout

My job is doing SW CAD drawings for a Laser sheetmetal shop. We do suspension parts for Dodge trucks, dunebuggys and offroad racetrucks. I will be making custom 1 inch longer front a-arms. I think I will do the lowers out of sheetmetal like trophy trucks since I see that Hotchkis is making some. I measured and modeled the front suspension. The layout shows the instant axis. This 3d relationship became clearer when the planes thru the upper A-arm ball joint and pivot points and same for the lower A-arm were added and the model run thru its travel. Still trying to understand all the ramifications (camber and caster change, anti-squat, Etc.) of raising the upper ball joint, Guldstrand modification, Etc. Also added some photos of some parts I made. The wrench for large Chrysler lower ball joints (I am still debaiting if I will be using these or the Camaro OE ones). Spanner wrenches for the Bilstein front coilovers and stainless steel alignment and body shims.

      CAD lower a-arm

Here is what I am thinking of making for the plus 1 inch lower A-Arm. The shock pocket is a little complex at the moment. It would be easier and I could adjust the ride height easier if I mounted the shock the other side up, but there is less unsprung weight this way.

Thanks Bryce, I have a ways to catch up to you.

Bobby, I am an engineer and design off road suspensions and race trucks using SolidWorks. We have a laser and cnc brakes. Thats why the design is the way it is, its what I do.
