I have the opportunity to buy an LS7 from a 2008 Z06. The engine was replaced last July under warranty with a new engine. It has 5000 miles since then.
What do you think the engine, dry sump with all the lines, computer and harness are worth?

Why was it replaced?
Don't know why it was replaced, doesn't really matter to me the old engine is gone.
This one is all new.
The 06-08 LS7's had valve train geometry issues so it may have been that.
I misunderstood. Thought you were buying the original pullout.
I would stay away from production LS7s. I read on the Corvette forums and LS1tech that they are known for dropping valves due to increased guide wear (at very low mileage). Most likely, that's why it was replaced. Unless the owner just beats the living snot out of it and threw a rod or something.
Most of the motors dropping valves were built in 2006-2007. Check the production of this motor and reference it against the
Corvette Forum data.
I thought all LS7's were built the same way?
Difference in a production vs crate LS7?
LS7 is a great motor, NA. For a supercharged or turbo app, go with the LS3.
BTW, I owned a 2007 Z06 and never had an issue with the motor. My motor was built
2 months after most of the ones that were having issues.
Havent seen too many full LS7 setups for sale. I would look at Corvette Forum or Ebays completed listings
for sold prices. I would say 6-7k, as you can buy a 436hp LS3 brand new for around $6400.
If you talk to many LS7 gurus they will tell you that the stock LS7 oiling system is great up to around 5500 RPM, sufficient between around 5500 and 6500 RPM, and somewhat lacking above 6500 RPM. They see failures to be ofter related to how folks drive. Keep in mind as well that earlier Z06s had lower capacity oil tanks which certainly didn't help. I would not (and have not) differentiate between take out and crate engines but with any used engine - LS7 or not - I assume that I'm just buying parts and that the engine is most likely in need of a rebuild. Just my 2 bits
How do you figure?
I have seen LS motors well over
100k miles that have been beat on repeatedly
as well as many high hp FI cars with stock bottom
end that hold up well. I would agree that buying a
used sbc would be dicey. I would feel confident
buying any used low mileage LS motor that has had an engine
leakdown test done or engine dyno performed.
Saying a used motor would probably have to be rebuilt
is the same as saying that pulling any motor from a vehicle
at any mileage would cause the motor to have to be rebuilt.
I have a Katech motor with 5k miles that engine
dynoed at 475 hp . My bet is I don't need a rebuild just yet.
These are LS motors! Show me something with
more power and reliability for its size foreign
or domestic. It just doesn't exist.
Old thread, let's move on :)
I want to know where I can find an LS7 for 5-6K ;)
